For some reason post boxes feel like something from another age.

The only time I seem to use them is to post my used ink cartridges to HP for recycling, or my used contact lenses and cases  to Vision Direct, ditto (I don't buy the lenses from there, but they take them anyway).

I hardly ever send physical cards any more, and I can't think of anything  else I'd ever post which didn't require me to queue at the Post Office to get proof of sending and/or delivery.

And it also feels ridiculous in the twenty first century that we are still calling our postal system "Royal Mail"!

Well, what has  the postal system got to do with the Royal Family

Ok Sue, thanks for your reasoning, I have no issue with the term "Royal" being used as a proud British person, but understand what side of the fence you sit on.

They did change it to ‘ Consignia’  it  cost millions of pounds and then they binned it.

Not surprised with that hideous option!🤣

As far as ED is concerned, certainly can’t called it “Speedy” anything..

I wonder if all of London has this problem?

Certainly not the case where I am in the country. Not close to a town but get regular delivery much to my astonishment compared to the shite delivery service in ED which has been going on since whoever thought the  idea  to close office in Sylvester Road.

As a matter of interest, are these post boxes in Central London?

Would be a good tourist trap “photo of King Charles 3 Post Box”?

If one called Time Out and asked for King Charles 3 Post Box to be added to tourist attractions - more people coming into local area equals more money spent in  local shops…

The postal deliveries where I live (off North Cross Road) have been much better lately. I'm not aware of anything having been delayed.

beansprout, I'm wondering why you are taking so much interest in East Dulwich matters if you have moved to the country?

Do they not have local forums out in the sticks? 😀

You have a problem with this?I spend sometime in ED - admittedly not all year.

No, I don't have a problem!

I just wondered, as you have mentioned several times on the forum that you have moved to Devon/the country, and I got the impression that you were glad to be out of London, so I assumed that you were no longer living in ED!

Learnt along time ago never assume….

Very true. I stand corrected!

In future I won't believe anything I read 🤣

Or perhaps I have misunderstood what you said or mixed you up with someone else, in which case I apologise.

If my memory serves me correctly Beansprout has been on the forum  at least as long as the fifteen years I've been. If you've been part of a community for a long period then you don't just lose interest if you move out if it, there are lots of people on here who moved out of SE22 years ago, maybe they grew up here, had a family here, longed to stay here having lived here for decades because it felt like home but couldn't afford to. It's not odd that someone who has invested a large part of their life in a certain community doesn't just erase it from their mind if they move out.
I grew up and lived in BlackHeath for 25 years, went through many rites of passage there, witnessed the births and deaths and weddings of my friends, knew every shop keeper, every square foot of the place, had many of the most formative and important experiences of my life there, and ultimately that will always be the place I think of as home. If someone had questioned or mocked why I remained interested in the community after I moved to ED I would have been perplexed to say the least.

Fair enough. We are all different.

I apologise (again). And stand corrected (again).

Sorry, Beansprout.

Think I've likely over/misinterpreted this, but the line on " proud British person.. what side of the fence" struck me as a bit odd in relation to the Royal Family (or was it just the word Royal?).

Whatever perspective you have on monarchy, I would have thought being skeptical/cynical about having our Royal Family in its current state is a perfectly legitimate "proud British" stance to have - all that taxpayers' money, profiting from our crumbling NHS, plus the challenge to proud democratic (waves around Magna Carta with patriotic pride/naivieté) norms like transparency and equality under the law..

On the post boxes themselves, afraid my own old-fashioned and nostalgic instincts kick in - I rather like them as one of our nation's benign historical legacies/quirks, without interpreting them as royalist bastions. I'll keep an eye out, just like I did for the Olympic gold ones.

    • Hi all My car was stolen between 1.30pm-1.50pm today in SE22 East Dulwich in South East London. I have of course reported this to the police but not much is being done, so I thought I'd give this a shot. The registration is GM66YOV, though its possible the licence plate may have been changed by now. If you see it anywhere please contact me or the police. Thankyou!
