London Tonight (ITV) did a special feature tonight (just after 6pm) on the re-issued guidance from the Ministry for Transport (Cycling Minister Robert Goodwill) on Pavement Cycling that was given to Stop Killing Cyclists following representations to the Minister for Transport Lady Kramer.

The Ecologist have also taken up the story:

Just bought a red fibre flare to go on the back of my helmet (as a result of applespider's recommendation)! My partner has one of those spokelit led lights - not bad, although I have seen brighter and more impressive ones but never been close enough to ask what they were.

I got mine for Christmas 2012. I used it every night (and the odd morning) for 40 minutes on flash and I changed the batteries in mid-April just as I started using it less as the nights got lighter. And I've just changed them again after wearing it from Sept onwards. I've got the full length one that takes AAs rather than the mini that takes lithiums. It lasts about 3 times longer than my little Knogs. I wouldn't call it battery hungry.

Katanita - I like them but think the hassle of removing would put me off.

The officer in charge of the Metropolitan Police's Operation Safeway has agreed to meet Stop Killing Cyclists, the week after next.

What issues re policing and cycling in London would you like to see raised?

On the general subject of lighting, not sure if this been discussed elsewhere, but there seems to be a bike lights arms race going on at the moment. On a number of occasions I have physically recoiled after being temporarily blinded by an ultra-bright light. It's good to be safe, but when other road users (I'm a cyclist) are put in danger, perhaps not so good. I think that Raul's comment on this thread is very sensible:

    • This week's edition of The Briefing Room I found really useful and impressively informative on the training aspect.  David Aaronovitch has come a long way since his University Challenge day. 😉  It's available to hear online or download as mp3. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002n7wv In a few days time resident doctors -who used to be known as junior doctors - were meant to be going on strike. This would be the 14th strike by the doctors’ union since March 2023. The ostensible reason was pay but now the dispute may be over without more increases to salary levels. The Government has instead made an offer to do something about the other big issue for early career doctors - working conditions and specialist training places. David Aaronovitch and guests discuss what's going on and ask what the problem is with the way we in Britain train our doctors? Guests: Hugh Pym, BBC Health Editor Sir Andrew Goddard, Consultant Gastroenterologist Professor Martin McKee, Professor of European Public Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Mark Dayan, Policy Analyst, Nuffield Trust. Presenter: David Aaronovitch Producers: Caroline Bayley, Kirsteen Knight, Cordelia Hemming Production Co-ordinator: Maria Ogundele Sound Engineers: Michael Regaard, Gareth Jones Editor: Richard Vadon
