I've never liked our dirge which is all about us saying how much we like our monarch and hate the Scots.

Other national anthems, or suggestions such as Jerusalem or Land of Hope and Glory, are too xenophobic for my liking.

And I far more enjoyed the 1970's when we booed the anthem (happy to cry at Abide with me any day). Happy to drop a bomb on that bladdy Sheffield Wednesday band that play at England games.

I do like Flower of Scotland, and some alternatives for other coutries such as Waltzing Matilda and Molly Malone.

But the one that really stirs me is Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika. I am writing to my MP asking for GB/UK to adopt this. Anyone else with me?

Now that would be good, we could plumb the depths of some of our Euro song entries.

Something that would have been very apt is 'Rock Bottom' in 1977 sung by Farah Fawcett Majors and fomer Radio 1 DJ Mike Read. The UFO heavy rock version would also be fun.

Love the tune I vow to me... but it remindes me of elitism, only because it featured in the film 'Another Country'.

uncleglen said "Jerusalem is the obvious choice if the Scots end up going it alone because it actually has 'England' in it. But the 'green and pleasant land' bit is not so apt these days (especially if they do the HS2)"

No, because if the Scots vote to leave the union that leaves 3 different units left - only one of which is England. These are Wales and Northern Ireland in case you hadn't noticed. So Jerusalem won't do.

Sighs.

actually Townleygreen I think uncleglen is looking ahead to when there is only one unit remaining, to save having to repeat the "Ooh, what shall 'we' have as an anthem ?" decision process. It's a decent efficiency, and gets us to where we really want to be, surely ?

Until the real hard core separatists are reawakened (anthem courtesy of Lauri Say)...

    • Do great pizzas there at community cafe.. lots going on — was free parking but plans  to like everywhere get folk to pay.  Nice area… only discovered it a few years ago..
    • Oh ok, I've looked at it again and I agree I misread it.  You are right. I hadn't realised there were two separate parks. I just looked on a map. I have only been to the smaller one, with the pond.
    • There is a huge area, near Telegraph Hill which is public space… park.. decent distance between houses and park as well. Well, none of my business.. certainly can’t think of any think worse than thousands of people jammed into  space, using hedges and rest of park as free urinals, really strange that they use that section as opposed to, guess you would call it open area ie no railings…
    • @Sue I think there was only 1 free day in the 7 day event GALA were asking for, that was the third day, after the first weekend. I think the second weekend was meant to be paid for access. I agree, the free Horniman music events are great but have nowhere near the same impact as GALA.
