You can see the electronic countdown for any bus stop online now, using your Smartphone. Even works for obscure stops that don't have or never had screens.

Go to http://m.countdown.tfl.gov.uk/ (or use one of the prettier Android/iPhone apps like Citymapper).

I think this is how they're intending people to get this info in the future, rather than installing any more screens.

Are you sure?

The tfl app definitely needs a smartphone. It locates the phone, then lists bus stops near it (or shows them on a map).

When you click on the appropriate bus stop, it lists bus numbers and the time they are due at that stop.

I haven't found it totally reliable. Yesterday a 484 arrived five to ten minutes before tfl had said, so luckily we were early at the bus stop.

Is there something else which works by texts?

Look at any bus stop. The pole with the timetable and the stop letter

There will be a sticker with a text number and a short code to send

It texts back the times

The bus stop terminals, the smartphone apps the texts all use the same data. Some routes like 37 and 484 are more erratic. Don't know if that's down to drivers updating base at random or if it's traffic related

But all are infinitely better than just a few years ago when we had nothing

    • How to you grow these? I've scattered meadow flower seeds many a time, but thistles don't take and I doubt if alder and birch is common round here.  Teasels pop up now and then, but even if they are self seeding usually don't see them the next year.  It was nice seeing the gold finches feeding off these when I do have them.  I do let the dandelions grow but not sure I've seen finches feeding off them.  I understand they are a great source of nectar for bees, butterflies and the like. On a related subject my lawns have changed greatly over the last couple of decades, warmer wetter winters, springs, earlier springs, droughts in the summer.  Moss and brambles thrive....
    • Sadly true though. I've just replenished my (clean)  feeders and put out suet blocks and logs. Now I'm waiting for the pigeons and squirrels to descend 🤣
    • https://butterandcrust.com/pages/home-u2 Adding that in case I'm not the only person who didn't know what they deliver! Now I know, sadly I'm not really into "artisan breakfast goods", not do I want to double my weight 🤣 I'm considering using a fruit and veg delivery service again, because I don't eat enough veg these days. I used to use Oddbox, but the quality deteriorated badly unfortunately (it was always wonky etc veg, which was fine, but I think they must have changed their sources or their quality control or something).
    • Yup, not bad at all! Delivery wasn't sharp on time, but given its done by bike it was overall a great service. I was also refunded right away for applejuice which smelled like it had gone off. Happy customer here.
