I've a dilemma. Mrs Medic's PC is probably nearing the end of it life. She thinks she wants an Tablet. She uses PC for email, browsing, Skype (v.important),some document usage, photo's.

Will a tablet do everything and is it better to stick to an Android than an Ipad if you are used to a PC? She has an old MAC but doesn't use it much.

Any advice, suggestions please?

Have you both considered a Windows tablet? Office is built in as is Skype (microsoft own it) Snap on a keyboard and you've a laptop! A tablet could replace a PC but with some limitations, Windows Tablets come in two editions one is limited to only running "apps" (RunTime or RT) the other will run full blown programs as well.

The apps will run on Windows 8 PC's and Phones and any purchases allow installation on 5 devices.

This is nice! http://www.nokia.com/gb-en/phones/tablet/lumia2520/

With either you'll have to learn a new Operating system, If you have a android phone you might have an easier transition. But they are quite easy to learn.

Hope this helps

I haven't seen any good reviews of hybrid tablet/laptop.

The requirements for both things are mutually exclusive in key areas - eg a laptop needs a decent screen size (even if only to accomodate a keyboard) , but a tablet needs to be sub 10" to be in any way light enough to use

I had to update a website at the weekend - and that is normally the only thing I use the laptop for these days. But even this time I used the tablet with a text editor client

Sitting in front of a proper desktop/laptop with screen/keyboard/mouse is definitely the only option sometimes. But less and less

More often than not, the speed with which I can open a tablet and get something done/checked/viewed is far, far better than waiting for any windows device to get it's act together

I use a bluetooth keyboard for typing with the tablet as well

I was kind of hoping that boot up time would be sufficiently improved with a solid-state device to circumvent this issue.

But then there's another probem... take a device with 64GB solid state storage, stick full Windows 8 on it, and all of a sudden that 64GB doesn't look so generous.

Still, I like the idea. I could live with a 11 inch laptop if the resolution was high enough.

I think a laptop is the same thing as a notebook...

Go for laptop. I'm using daughter's old netbook at mo - it's ok but laptop more user friendly and bigger screen is easier on the eye.

Only advantage of netbook I can see is if you want to take it to lectures to type notes as it is small and lightweight.

She upgraded to laptop for uni with an inheritance and much prefers it.

Thanks Jeremy - as you can see my knowledge base is quite a low one ;)

    • I would leave London, or at a push move back to north London. In SE London if you want to get away in a car you are trapped, always an hour to go the first 10 miles, chugging up to the M4 or round the south circular, which is really just a line someone drew connecting a load of roads. and I know there are trains but first you have to get to those mainline stations, unless you only want to leave London to go to Kent. which I don't.
    • It was you who  made it personal in the first place,  Jazzer. You said you didn't feel safe in the streets,  and you said you didn't go to Central London because you didn't feel safe there. So are you now saying that wasn't "personal"? "Fire from the hip." Another interesting choice of words 🙄 I'm not "demanding" anything! I asked you some perfectly reasonable questions in  response to your own statements. None of which you have answered. Never mind. It seems to be pointless having a discussion with you. It's long past my bedtime. I'm going to turn on my sleep app  and go to sleep 😴💤
    • Hi Forumites, This afternoon someone in a dark blue/black saloon car collided with my parked car on Thompson Road, SE22 9JR. I have a neighbour’s doorbell cam footage of the collision at 14:30 19/09/2025 but am unable to identify the registration plate. If anyone has footage of a car travelling down Thompson Road towards Crystal Palace Road at that time please PM me. Of course if the Perp would like to confess they can also PM me. Thankyou.
