The op said this government's policies- in fact most of the problems we have are a result of the previous government's rubbish policies- allowing the proliferation of gambling opportunities (Tessa Jowell) means people have less money to spend on other things. Labour allowed the banks to do what they liked (Gordon Brown gave the Bank of England a free hand). It was Labour that allowed central government to override local government planning issues (John Prescott). Energy prices have been high since before this government due to green taxes.

Well we all know about stats and lies.

ZHC lets see - never know if you will have work so how can anyone plan for bills, shopping etc. Do not have the same employment rights as other employees. Can be given work or be sent home at a whim of boss. No job security. Etc. It's still not why shop shut.

Not everyone at every stage of their life seek security and some quite happy with flexibility.....not saying these are all willingly entered into, universally liked or never abused but they DO suit some people. Read the research not the propoganda....
I know several people that have zero hour contracts willingly as it allows them to pick up casual shifts at various workplaces without having the hassle of having to submit personal tax returns as their work goes through the books and PAYE. Whilst not the case for everyone, the benefits of zero hour contract for SOME is hardly propaganda.
I line manage 30 people who are on zero hour contracts. I have been looking in to getting them a better deal, but about 4 of them have actually said to me they like things as they are, because although they don't get sickness/holiday pay (actually their hourly rate does incorporate a holiday premium, so it's not actually correct to say they don't get paid holiday), they like that they can basically choose when they want to go away, and tell me they're not available for work.

Zero-hour contracts can be very good for those at the higher end of the skill spectrum, they allow flexible working and portfolio of jobs. Often they are used to allow what are, in effect, call-off contracts for individuals, without the need to go through tendering processes and recruitment every time.


They are bad for low-paid workers where the flexibility is all the employers, where the employer requires exclusivity and where e.g. only on-site but not travel between jobs time is paid for.

I repeat...La Avril is NOT the knicker shop...the knicker shop is called Bloomers and is next door!

Think it is probably very important for Bloomers (a great lingerie shop) not to be confused for a shop (La Avril) that such rumours are circulating about. I for one was beginning to wonder if it was closed, not great for business.


Think that is why new wave is making the point.

THANK-YOU Cora...That is EXACTLY why I was making a point of telling people to stop pointing fingers at the wrong business.

God knows its hard enough for small independent shops not on the 'main drag' without people assuming they've closed doen.

    • At it's peak I recall 16 Furkin pubs, all brewing their own.    The first pub was the Goose, followed by the Ferret, the wonderful Pheonix, Fox and one other, not necessarily in that order, when I discovered them. I did all 16 on public transport in one day with a group many years ago, if Guinness had a record this would be one, as everyone else would hire a minibus. Reverting to Wiki, it maxed out with 19 home brew pubs, and many more not brewing before the end: chain was established in 1979 by David Bruce as Bruce's Brewery, the Firkin Brewery grew as a chain of mostly brewpubs offering cask ale. It was acquired by Midsummer Leisure in 1988, Stakis Leisure in 1990 and then by Allied Domecq in 1991; by 1995 the chain had 44 pubs, 19 of which brewed beer on site.[1] In 1999, Punch Taverns bought the entire chain and the rights to the Firkin brand,[2] and then sold 110 of the pubs to Bass, leaving 60 Firkin pubs under Punch ownership.[3] The brewery side of the chain was wound up, and in March 2001 Punch announced that the Firkin brand was to be discontinued.[4]
