Has anyone thought about a house swap?

My mind has turned to this year's holidays and I am wondering about a house swap.


We are planning to have the whole of August off in Europe (flexible as to where), and I think it could be a great idea both from a financial perspective and because it would be lovely to swap with another family so the house we go to has toys etc (and vice versa). I think our house is well set up for it at this end.


Has anyone ever tried it? How did it work? How did you find your swapee?


NB if anyone knows somebody who would be interested in swapping let me know :)

Yes we did a house swap via the Guardian Home Exchange site last year. We spent a week in Budapest while the Hungarian family stayed in East Dulwich. It was great! Nice to be off the tourist track a bit, we met some of their friends and neighbours and the house was very well equipped so great for families. They left our property as they had found it and we intend to do it again this year.

We did a couple of years ago with a good friend of our next door neighbours who lives in Barcelona - had a great experience, with the benefit of knowing that the person you're swapping with is a known commodity. The friend (originally from UK) does this regularly as a way of being able to see/stay near old friends who wouldn't have room for her and whole family to come and stay for a decent length of time.


Would do again - didn't think husband would be keen but it went so well he's happy to try again! Any of your neighbours got overseas friends they'd like to come and visit.

I have seriously wanted to do a house swap since I saw the movie House Swap a few years ago. I wouldn't know where to begin, but it is certainly something I have really considered doing. I obviously have the concerns of some stranger coming to stay in my home for any length of time. I guess the fact that you will be staying in their home makes it that much easier to do. Are there websites or something that allow people to post a house swap? I would imagine that by now they would have to have built websites for it by now.

Yes there are websites, there is a membership fee but then you know the other people are also invested in the exchange working as they have also paid to join. From memory there is some kind of insurance deal as well. I haven't joined one yet but plan to so will watch this thread with interest. Recommendations for agencies/sites would be good!

      I have sympathy with any voter, anyone, who having witnessed the last 14 years and then Labour in the last year and wonders just how can things be this bad  unless a) they voted for brexit b) voted Tory after 2010 c) is thinking of voting reform  because anyone who thinks reform won’t make things a thousand times worse after voting for the previous?  It is they who are the problem.  They are the reason the country is in the doldrums with an embarrassingly-timid Labour government

      In what way? Maybe it just felt more intelligent and considered coming directly after Question Time, which was a barely watchable bun fight.

      Yes, all this. Totally Sephiroth. The electorate wants to see transformation overnight. That's not possible. But what is possible is leading with the right comms strategy, which isn't cutting through. As I've said before, messaging matters more now than policy, that's the only way to bring the electorate with you. And I worry that that's how Reform's going to get into power.  And the media LOVES Reform.

      “There was an excellent discussion on Newscast last night between the BBC Political Editor, the director of the IFS and the director of More In Common - all highly intelligent people with no party political agenda ” I would call this “generous”   Labour should never have made that tax promise because, as with - duh - Brexit, it’s pretending the real world doesn’t exist now. I blame Labour in no small part for this delusion. But the electorate need to cop on as well.  They think they can have everything they want without responsibilities, costs or attachments. The media encourage this  Labour do need to raise taxes. The country needs it.  Now, exactly how it’s done remains to be seen. But if people are just going to go around going “la la laffer curve. Liars! String em up! Vote someone else” then they just aren’t serious people reckoning with the problem yes Labour are more than a year into their term, but after 14 years of what the Tories  did? Whoever takes over, has a major problem
