For the last 4 weeks we have been getting nuisance telephone calls from a local number. When we pick up the phone and answer with "Hello", the caller usually says "Wrong number" and hangs up. If we pick up the phone and wait for the caller to say something, she will say "Hello" only. The voice sounds like an elderly lady with a typical South London accent.

We have offered to help her several times, thinking that her phone is programmed incorrectly but she does not enter into a proper conversation. When we ask her who she is trying to call and she responds with ..... "I'll tell you tomorrow".

It's quite sad really but also a bit annoying now as she must have called 30+ times during the last 4 weeks. Calls can be any time of the day. One day we had 6 between 3:40am and 5:00am. She may well be calling other numbers apart from ours.

Caller ID shows that her number is local to Dulwich and the last two digits are 88.

Using on-line resources (BT fibre BroadBand enquiry service) we have been able to ascertain that her phone line is routed though BT cabinet No 16 which serves a limited number of properties in Wood Vale , Underhill Road, Friern Rd, Melford Road and the top end of Lordship Lane -specifically the following postcodes:-

We have not reported this matter to the police but have opted to have her number barred from calling us. The fact remains this lady appears to need help so if the above clues suggest that it could be a someone you know, you may be able to assist her. Good luck.

Its a SPAM call..

It's one of a group of Scams.

It is a computer not a real person. It waits for a response and it Voice activated.

What happens is .. you get a missed call message if set up on your phone.

You call back and get clobbered with a high charge for just calling back.

Fox you are talking absolute rubbish - again.

I have caller ID. It is a local number ie 0208-***-**88.

I asked BT faults to check the number and their equipment in the exchange. That all checked out OK. BT also said they would talk gently to the lady and ask her to refrain.

They had a record of all her calls and they confirmed she had been calling us and that it was a local number.

If you let me have your number by PM, I will call her up and give it to her. Then you can test your theory ;)

Kindly review the original post plus the extra detail above and engage you thinking ability next time.

Edited to correct miss-spelling.

I have no intention of giving you my number...

.. so you may pester me yourself to prove your point.

or if what you say is true.. how would that help 'The Old Lady' that you claim you have tried to help.

You seem to have an unhealthy obsession with Cabinet 16.

This is not the only thread where you have shown interest in it's whereabouts.

Didn't you see the smiley, Fox?

It appears that you have gone off at half c0ck yet again without reading the post.

What is the significance of:-

Using on-line resources (BT fibre BroadBand enquiry service) we have been able to ascertain that her phone line is routed though BT cabinet No 16 which serves a limited number of properties in Wood Vale , Underhill Road, Friern Rd, Melford Road and the top end of Lordship Lane -specifically the following postcodes:-

Then listing 26 postcodes when you already know her number .. And you claim BT are dealing...

Whilst any line can be made out-going only I/C Calls barred.

or in-coming only O/G Calls barred

I am not aware of the facility where one line can be barred from calling a single number..

Could possibly done in software but not a facility..

You still don't get it, do you?

The purpose of identifying the caller's approximate location (by giving a few street names and postcodes) was to provide a further clue to a relative or friend of the lady so that they could assist her directly.

Hence earlier trying to find the approx location of BT cabinet 16. From another freely available BT on-line resource I was able to identify the postcodes served by that particular cabinet.

This lady obviously needs help and a relative or friend might be a best first solution. She is possibly just lonely and a wee bit scatty.

The post from "happy2" indicates that she has been phoning others locally in a similar fashion.

We tried to offer her help but that didn't work. We did consider reporting it to the police as these calls can be construed as malicious. But we chose not to do this, considering her age and possibly her delicate state of health.

We provided several clues in the original post to assist a relative help identify her. These were:-

Partial phone numnber ie 0208-***-**88

Description ie elderly lady with typical south London accent.

Approximate location - by street and postcode.

What, pray may we ask, would you have done?

Well, well, Fox for someone who worked for BT for 26 years you may have a bit to learn. Have you not heard of the service provide by BT called "Choose to Refuse"? It costs around ?3.75 per month and it bars *specific* numbers from getting through to you.

Read about it here http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8500

There is another way to achieve the same result. With a modern DECT phone set, you can bar any nominated number from making your phone ring. These systems also keep a record of each time a barred number tried to contact you.

Now, knowing how you always want to have the last word, have a go at the above - after you have looked up

http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8500

Any more of your "shoot from the hip remarks" are always welcome Foxy. It is a real speciality of yours.

Well I left BT 21 years ago.. and then worked for 14 years in Telecoms Networks and Systems.

Not familiar with current facilities available to customers...

Left Telecoms after 40 years 6 years ago. Have forgotten more than what most people will ever learn.

Have enough problems keeping up with XHTML, CSS, javaScript, C++, Python, Perl

Things that still interest me.

OK well better to consider that before you express your comments.

I think you might need to work on the *modesty* bit too Fox.

Meanwhile........

Your responses remind me of a post a few weeks ago from MrBen

Just remember. The views of The Fox are not necessarily the views of the individual behind the Fox. I'm guessing the man behind the fur knows he's plain wrong on this one. It's ok, he's allowed to hold his hand up. But Fox, you ARE a grump and the odd ray of sunshine from you at times would be most welcome.

Back to you Fox.

*Like*

so you haven't reported these nuisance (NOT malicious) calls at all?

The police can approach the woman and go through various things especially establishing if she's ok and all that.

I would have thought it being more responsible to report it than to ignore it - just say, in whatever confused state she may get herself into, there's one time when she really does need help and you aren't able to distinguish between normal calls and not normal calls? Having official awareness could make the difference. OR if you really don't want to get involved then have the number blocked on your phone.

If someone posts a load of old crap in response to your opening post, how is correcting them a cat fight?

KalamityKel Wrote:

We did our research and found that repeated calls in the middle of the night are actually deemed by the police to be malicious

A visit from the police, for some people, can be an unsettling experience - particularly if they are investigating something you have done which could result in a charge.

Thanks LadyD.

I guess I may not the only one who feels a bit offended when both their integrity and intentions are being challenged in the manner of Fox's posts.

Tom

Why does everything result in a bitch-fest on the EDF. The opening post has received nuisance calls from someone who May or may not have mental health problems or just be lonely and needing someone to talk with. They have taken it upon themselves to block the number of the person, and not contact the police because (rightly or wrongly) they have made the calculation that it could potentially cause more harm than good to someone who is already vulnerable (totally understandable). They then try and be helpful by narrowing down the postcode area of the caller and provide the last few digits of the nuisance callers telephone number (potentially aiding a relative who reads this thread towards helping said person). All of the above seems perfectly reasonable to me. Once again, a helpful thread is turned into a travelling circus, and for once I have nothing to do with it (because that's what I do doncha know?).

    • This may be somewhat out of date but virtually no environmental benefit & almost entirely grass... really? https://www.gigl.org.uk/sinc/sobi09/ Description Peckham Rye was established as an open space in the late 19th century and includes several valuable habitat features spread across the park. The park is a Grade II Listed landscape, and has recently been restored with assistance from the Heritage Lottery Fund. A small community garden within the site is managed by the Friends of Peckham Rye. Peckham Rye Park won a Green Flag Award again for 2022. The site is used by the Southwark Health Walks project as part of a Walking the Way to Health (WHI) scheme. Wildlife This large park has several valuable habitat features. The most important of these is the only remaining above-ground section of the River Peck and the most natural stream in the borough. The stream is heavily shaded by native, unmanaged wet woodland dominated by alder, ash and pedunculated oak with a ground cover of pendulous sedge and bramble. Alder dominated woodland is a rare habitat in Southwark. Although somewhat altered with weirs, other artificial structures and ornamental planting, some sections are still in their natural banks and includes yellow flag, watercress, water figwort and cuckooflower. The largest of three ponds supports marginal vegetation including hemp agrimony. A variety of waterfowl nest on the wooded island, including tufted duck, coot, Canada goose and mallard. Substantial flocks of gulls visit the park in winter and bats are likely to forage over the water. Small blocks of predominantly native woodland, mostly on the boundary between the Park and the Common, are dominated by oak and ash with a well-developed understory, but sparse ground flora. Spring bulbs have been planted in previous years. These and several dense shrubberies support a good bird population and small numbers of pipistrelle bats are present. Infrequently mown grassland is located in one large area and was seeded in 2009. It's composition includes giant fescue, ladies bedstraw, meadowsweet, black knapweed and wild carrot. The rest of the park consists of amenity grassland with some fine mature trees.
    • Same here. Incredibly selfish behaviour. Also illegal.
    • I heard them & our two dogs were extremely upset by it..  bad enough during the evenings but at least can have music on to dilute the noise!   Some people have literally zero thoughts for others!!
    • I have signed that petition.  Someone was letting off loud fireworks at about 3 am this morning. They woke me up.   I don’t know where they were exactly but it sounded like they were in the vicinity of Dog Kennel Hill.
