Probably someone burning wet leaves or wood, that usually gives off a strong burning smell and alot smoke

its been hazy all evening - not noticed any different... boyf thinks it could be build up to the potential storms tomorrow - not smelling smoke at the mo - nearish and got my windows open!!

Just be glad it doesn't stink of garlic, my neighbour has a habit of cooking garlic every single day at all hours of the day...yum...when you are sleeping, nothing like the raw smell of garlic to wake you up!(6)

Are there any Chinese families around there? Yesterday was the last day in the festival of the Hungry Ghost, where offerings are made to ancestors in the afterlife. Round our way the streets are rammed with braziers burning 'Hell Money', which is a kind of ancestor-related inter-bank transfer.

It's possible it was the lingering smell of burnt mattress. I was woken up by fire engines and shouting at 7.20am Saturday morning as there was a bit of a blaze near the stairwell of my block (Bredinghurst, Dawson Heights). What remains of it is a pile of springs. Lovely. :-S

Singapore, Sue, but it's no loss as this month is Hari Raya for Malaysian Muslims. The fasting from dawn until dusk for Ramadan is compensated by a huge fair than runs the opposite sides of the clock for the period of a month.

It's party time all year round ;-)
