Hackney is pretty poor: http://www.hackneygazette.co.uk/news/shocking_child_poverty_map_of_london_shows_hackney_is_third_worst_affected_area_in_the_uk_1_1176263

Don't get me wrong, I know that any money in these areas is definitely a recent thing, I was just surprised to hear that people still think of E London as "poor". I mean there are still loads of poor areas in E London, but I thought the current image of Hackney and even Stratford would have glossed over all that a bit.

I guess they mainly interviewed people from north and west london!

To be honest most of east london (anything east of canary wharf and hackney) seems to be pretty grim and scruffy, with property prices to match. And the majority of SE London is just characterless and unloveable IMO, with a few exceptions.

South East London contains two genuine villages, Dulwich and Blackheath, numerous conservation areas which look the same today as they did in Victorian times, Brockley is a great example of this. Our problem in this corner of the city is poor transport connections. Overground is changing that perception of isolationism, but it will take many years and until then the only areas to benefit will be the areas of zone 2 on or near an overground station and preferably close to an SW postcode - fortunately we in ED have both of these things in our favour.

    • You can get a card at the till, though, to get the discount. You don't have to carry it with you (or load it onto your phone), you can just get a different card each time. Not sure what happens if they notice 🤣
    • Yes..that may be the case but membership STARTING at £115 a month is still unafforable for many. Council gyms also have a large range of equipment and I had a  PT at Dulwich leisure centre when I was in Full Time employment who was incredible and even kept in contact during lockdown giving me a program I could do at home and checking in weekly at no charge or personal gain for herself. I dont doubt that Fit For may be a good gym (Its been in situ long enough so must be doing something right) However the cost of membership means it is affordable for the few not the many. If I could afford that kind of fee I would rather get a train to Canary Wharf and go to Virgin active where theres a pool and incredible classes and facilities
    • This sounds great 👍
    • We found a red TREK bike yesterday that had clearly been stolen and dumped. Would love to reunite it with its owner. Get in touch if you know whose it is.
