has anyone worked in the restaurant industry who has replied to this thread...?? I can't say i have eaten in the cafe or even noticed it if i am honest. But for those of us who have worked within the industry you would know how rare a FHO (food hygiene officer) would give our anything above 3 stars. While training to become a tailor i worked in some of London's finest restaurants and hotels. You would die of shock if i were to tell you how many of them had mice (and house hold names not just small cafes) FHO's check from everything to bacteria count on door handles, to if your labelling your food correctly and storing in the correct place. All it takes is one sloppy chef the night before to store meat above veg in the fridge and one waiter not to wipe a surface correctly.... and BANG.... When a FHO issues a certificate they would give a time frame of return normally within the month... So if a low score was given it would not last as premises are told if the score does not improve the face closure. So give the cafe a break if its hygiene does not improve you will know as it will be closed. If you have concerns contact the Food Environment Agency and they will re send an officer. But we all are eager it seems to point fingers and cast aspersions rather use our energy in a more positive way..

For a footer the bacteria count on a shop door handle would be 4-7,000 times high than that of the cafe... how many of you open doors...? hold bus or train handles?? read the already read newspaper on the train...? and then touch your face.... Your more likely to get sick from that...

Even though the branding is cheap and cheerful Wetherspoons still turns over ?626 MILLION POUNDS last year! so the big corporations will hit very high on cleaning and health and safety audits. They have a vast training programme which covers every single aspect scenario known to man. so its the Weatherspoons the Macdonalds the buyer kings of this world that would be the cleanest as they have the infer structure to do so. They may look like s*** holes but behind the scenes where ?1 per pint joe public don't go... would be spotless

Er I think you missed the point about where JohnL sees the stars!

Anyway, what absolute tosh you spout - cleaning and basic hygiene takes nothing more than an appropriate cleaning product and elbow grease! Not millions of pounds. You are also wrong about the star ratings as they have nothing to do with H&S, they're are about food hygiene laws. Where did you say you worked again?!

Online I imagine. You don't think they would advertise such a rating on the premises?

  • 1 month later...

I just tend to go by how busy a place is and how clean it appears.

In a local cafe if its quiet you can assume theres something wrong and a reason why people are avoiding it,

Also I tend to think that the busier a cafe is, the fresher the food will be.

If I googled scores on the doors before deciding to eat somewhere I'd prob never eat out!

Plus do remember all the michelin starred establishments that have suffered food poisoning outbreaks relatively recently-I can think of at least two

I go in, sit down, peruse menu, order. See the open kitchen as I get more sugars for my tea, chat a bit with the staff, see my egg in the fryin pan, sit down. Wait patiently for my fry. What do yo see that is so bad...or am I just a clarty barsteward? If I am I will live with it. How many times have I been off sick in the last 4 years...None. Robust guts or just dinnae get stressed about every bit of dust, fly,bug or pigeon that ever crossed my path.

I totally agree..I think some people must just be neurotic with too much time on their hands

What Jeremy and Help-ma-Boab said.

You don't know how lucky you are (were) to have Pretty's on your doorstep. I'd kill for that now.

Lovely place, nice staff, great breakfast menu. Never a day off sick here either. Scores on the doors is a load of utter rubbish.

    • Have you been back to Dugard & Daughters and discussed it with them yet? What was their response and reaction? There are other butchers to choose from. I've used the same one (not the one you mention) for probably 9-10 years and wouldn't go anywhere else. Always get well looked after.
    • Jump into Lewisham, just the other side of Woodvale is the "Horniman Heights" with a mix of semi's and larger Victorian houses. Probably safer and quieter than perhaps where you are and have been looking.  And no need to blow £2m.
    • As a resident in this part I would agree, with the proviso that it's quite hilly so not ideal cycling territory for the frailer or very much younger. Obviously good access to the South Circular, now virtually the only east: west route open after LTN closures. Only one blue plaque - C S Forester. Most houses are Victorian or Edwardian with some slightly earlier. Generally 4-6 Bedrooms depending on attic conversions.
    • Doesn't sound too dissimilar to my engagements with the council!   Zero chance of a balanced summary in a single place I am afraid - read anything by Peter Walker in the Guardian on the matter, then read anything in the Daily Mail on the matter and plot a course for somewhere between the two and there you shall find the truth!
