Holiday apartment/aparthotel in New York

We're thinking of going to New York with our 5 year old this summer. We've got into the habit of always staying in cottages, villas, apartments and the like when we go away so that we always have the chance to put him to bed and then have a bit of an evening to ourselves. Does anyone know of anywhere or done anything like this in New York? My other half read a trip advisor piece today that said it can be really dodgy to do private lets as there are massive restrictions in subletting so many places in NYC. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

I posted on another thread today on this too. Have a look at air bnb. People rent out all kinds of spaces for visitors. There's a feedback system too. It's all legal and properly run.

Just type in where you want to go, and what size accomodation you are looking for, and see what comes up.

Airbnb is a brilliant idea but we've given up on at as every time we've tried to book something that the site says is available, we've had an email a day or two later saying it's bit available. Great idea but badly run website.

my friends from NY who now live elsewhere always use craiglist to pick up a room/apartment for short stays without any problems

How about a house swop? I did this a few years ago and got a great apartment overlooking the Hudson river.

About 18 months ago or so - we used Beekman Towers with our 2 kids ..... would definitely recommend it.

Thanks all. We'll have a look. The problem is that so many of these things are apparently illegal and therefore a bit of a gamble. Who knew?!? Every other city is fine, just not New York! Grrrr

Have used air bnb for two trips, fine both times.

As for the issue of illegally sub-letting in NY... surely it's the landlord who's taking the gamble, not you!
