My computer was driving me crazy-recommendation

I just wanted to tell everyone about a positive experience I had with a local IT company. My daughter downloaded a program onto my laptop and almost immediately I was inundated with pop ups, adverts and antivirus upgrade demands. I tried to fix it myself, but after 2 days I remembered I had purchased IT support with the laptop at PC World. It took me 2 hours in a queue a Old Kent rd for them to say they would look at it and call me. 4 days later I had still not heard from them so called and spent over 45 minutes waiting for someone to come and tell me the verdict. After a further 25 minutes, I was fuming so decided to go back to Old Kent Rd. They then proceeded to tell me that I was not covered for viruses(??) and that my whole windows system would need reinstalling. They asked if I had made a copy of my windows 8 (does anyone else know we are supposed to do this?)They then advised me that without a windows disk, there was nothing the could do and suggested I look in store as they had some great deals on the latest notebooks!! I was so fuming as I had been paying for cover, so obviously I am not leaving it without taking further action. I spoke to a friend who recommended a local IT support company who repair computers by remote. She also said that she had a similar experience at PC World. I contacted the IT website and I had to download the remote access software, which was very simple as they give you instructions. Then they literally spent 1 hour 20 minutes and fixed it. It is now running perfectly and faster than before. They support technician gave some really good advice links on their website whilst working on my computer, and it only cost me ?29.99 and then ?9.99 a month for unlimited cover.

I really thought that my laptop was a gonner and I now realise that antivirus does not protect you from getting Trojan viruses! I would definitely recommend this company, so if you are having problems, give them a whirl!

You are apparently enormously more trusting than me. You say they are local. How do you know that? Do you know who they are?

I'm also wondering why their archive of testimonials dates back to February 2013 when their domain, cheapest-web-design.com, obtained through Domains By Proxy LLC, thus preserving their anonymity, was only registered in December 2013.

I am not sure about the website but my friend used them over a year ago...definitely way before Dec last year. To be honest I wouldn't have used them without a recommendation, hence me leaving one on here as they were brilliant with my pc and friend said the same. Also I now would never trust PC World again and they are supposed to be a reputable company.

The company is based in Camberwell

I doubt it's incorporated. Any company has to include its name, number and regstered address on its website. Besides, the only registered Fix-PC Ltd I can find is Scottish.

Am I right btw in thinking you are Knights Tutoring?

I'm glad it worked out for you Ashley, but I wouldn't touch that website with a VERY long bargepole. No address, no contact details... just give them money and download a remote access program and they have open access to your computer.

I think the main point here is that you trusted complete strangers, regardless of whether they were recommended or not, to externally have full access to your computer... brave or stupid time will tell, on which you cannot possibly rely on any recommendation just yet.

I'm sure they are "fine" and carry a good reputation.

I personally don't sit comfortably with this method of fixing your computer unless you are already acquainted with the company and I think it is bad practise from the company itself for this service to be offered straight off. Why didn't you go to their "shop"/premises with said machine like you did with PC world? Was this suggested to you?

Oh Dear

What a palava, if anybody states they need a reset and reboot nowadays there is a partition disk in all computers that you can reset and set your computer back to factory settings without a need of a disk. It is usually ctrl and a number.

Failing that you just need to look online for a reboot disk that can cost you anything between ?3.00 - 15.00 dependant where you buy it.

Thanks

Mason

To answer to all replies...Yes , they did say I had the option of bringing my laptop to their offices, but it was not convenient for me.I went for the remote access option as a friend had used them. Yes, I am Knights Tutoring and no this experience I have shared is not an advert, I am a tutor, and clearly not an IT specialist.I came on here to share a negative experience and a positive one. It was not meant as anything other than sharing some information, so you can take the company I used or leave it, I dont really care, it makes no odds to me. My experience with them was fine, great in fact and I am very grateful,

I was unable to put back to factory settings as I would have lost some assessment software that couldn't be backed up because my computer wasn't working. So shoot me down for trusting a friends good experience and then sharing it on here!!

And to East_Dulwich... I live in East Dulwich and work in Clapham, so hence my sharing on there too. It seems a bit sad that a simple post can induce such detective work and much barking up the wrong tree... Funny though, have a great week back at work x

    • The ridiculous hyperbole about the park being ruined is not going to aid your cause take a photo a couple of  weeks after all the seeding and repair works I saw taking place at the weekend I would think it will be well on the way to repair. Anyone in urgent need of a picnic can use the rye common instead of the park. I live 200m from Colyton road this is very much my back yard.  I didn’t go and I fear I’m past the age group it’s aimed at. It’s been  well organised each year and it seems the organisers are trying hard to please residents,  who I don’t argue are inconvenienced for 3 days out of 365.  I was disappointed they got refused another weekend that I understand would be aimed more at families and fogeys  - much more my demographic.
