I'm going down to Pompey next weekend for the Bupa Great South Run, and I've got to do a few things around the City before the run. What are the 'dodgy' areas of Portsmouth, as in where are the no go areas? I mean every place has them. If anyone could give me the heads up on where not to stray, I'd be grateful. I've got to go over the the lifeboat station right on the other side of Eastney? God knows. Can I walk over there or should I cab/bus it....?

Don't look anyone in the eye, don't spill anyone's pint and avoid the town centre between the hours of 5pm Friday though to midnight on a Sunday and you should be ok.

There's a pub called "The Unemployed, Disillusioned, Drunk & Angry Docker" which should probably be avoided unless you can do the accent and look the part.

What are the 'dodgy' areas of Portsmouth?

For expediency it may be quicker to list the non-dodgy areas....lol

Actually its a fine place full of "proper" people and as long as you are not planning a "One-Woman invasion" to take over their "Manor" you'll be all right!

From Sky News at the time of the Iraq invasion

"Umm Qasr is a town similar to Southampton", UK Defence Minister Geoff Hoon told the House of Commons yesterday. "He's either never been to Southampton, or he's never been to Umm Qasr", said one British soldier, informed of this while on patrol in Umm Qasr. Another added: "There's no beer, no prostitutes, and people are shooting at us. It's more like Portsmouth."

Well, I've always grown up in multi cultural communities, and I know from experience that 100% white working class communtities can (I say CAN; I would like to point out that I am not making a sweeping statement for the whole of the UK or world!) be very bigoted in their views on race and towards 'different' people in general.

You have a point there MW. It does seem like quite a one sided place, although it has changed quite a bit over the years due to the easy(er) commute into London and as a result of redevelopment around the Gun Wharf area.

It's not a place I'd choose to live, but it's far safer than any slightly dodgy London area in my opinion.

Sorry been out all day.

Pompey is my home town and I am proud to come from the most densley populated City in the UK.

There are not many areas that you would naturally go to that you would need to avoid to be honest. Stick to Southsea / and you won't go far wrong. Eastney is ok too of course. When I was there (left in 94) the places to avoid were Buckland / Landport and Somerstown. I guess they still are!

Don't try and walk to Eastney - it is deceptively far away. Get the bus or a cab (cab's are plentiful and all run by the same reasonably priced firm!)

Where are you staying? Are you going out for the evening? Do you wanna eat or drink or dance?

Remember, you will be among god's own chosen people as soon as you hit a PO post code. Mention Sterns to them and they will love you!!

Have a great time and if you need any more info then PM me!

    • It took the Tories 14 years to dig that 20bn blackhole. It's taken Labour 14 months to double it.  You cant get rid of Reeves though because the next person will actually be totally incompetent. There are no MPs in Labour capable of performing better than the current shower.
    • Thanks P. That sounds like a bargain compared to other horror stories I've heard!
    • DD, "Rejoice rejoice. It's a pity he and his fellow clowns were completely annihilated at the ballot box. I mean they were doing so well after all 🙃🙃" At least the economy and unemployment weren't in the mess they are now. What is it, give the public sector a whopping pay increase with no strings attached, double the black hole and then blame it on the last Govt. Give me strength. Rachel from accounts shouldn't be anywhere near the economy. The final straw was increasing employer NI contributions and look how that's worked out. Month on month both inflation and unemployment have risen. Won't be long before inflation and u/e are exceeding 5%, but guess what, They'll blame Sunak and go.  Lets have a snap election right NOW, then see how poorly Starmer, Reeves and Rainer do. They're already plotting to get rid of Starmer, and if you think its bad now, you ain't seen nothing yet. Oh and did I mention Starmer wanting to stop Freedom of Speech............................................Normal people can see right through what him and co are doing, great at spending other peoples money, him and co don't have = bankruptcy. We'll just repeat the economic collapse that happened in Greece and wasn't it in Italy as well?
    • One of the best of Shakespeare 's plays.  I did Othello for A level. Also seen a number of stage and film versions. Is there any specific aspects of the play that is difficult for your daughter to understand?
