The Herne Tavern

Hi All

Just had a meal at the Herne Tavern. V disappointing. Stale food.

Ate there a few months ago and it was really good!

Anyone else experienced the same recently?

Anyone know what's going on?

Yeah, we've experienced the same. We use to go quite regularly (with visitors, due to good food) but found it's gone downhill and haven't been back. We'd rather walk further to other places.

Shame as it's one of our locals, and we use to really enjoy going there

Yup, friend had a veggie burger 2 weeks ago at the quiz. Grease ridden and disgusting.

Complained - vague apology - mostly looked offended - was offered a refund but then only a glass of wine when they realised we'd paid in advance. ?4 off a ?10 burger - unacceptable. Too embarrassed to press the point in the middle of the excellent quiz.

We just had a roast lunch on Sunday and the food was just about eatable very disappointing!!!

Eatable is more often used to mean palatable. As in this case.

Whereas Edible is more often used in relation to plants etc that are not poisonous.

i thought this - when it first changed hands about a year ago we went an had an excellent Sunday lunch, we went back a few weeks ago as we had a power cut early evening and couldn't cook. I also had a veggie burger and it was really average for the price.

I know, how good can a veggie burger be really, but this was pretty poor.

I know they have been having trouble with the food lately but the new owners have now actually moved in and will be taking a much more hands on approach so expect things to improve rapidly

Try the White Horse, Nigel Road (set back from the main road before it reaches Rye Lane). It is a very good traditional pub

and the Sunday Lunch is excellent VFM. They average 150+ covers every Sunday so it is not just myself that rates it very highly. If Peckham is outside your comfort zone, try The Palmerston which serves a great Sunday Lunch but which is a lot more costly.

Yep... at ?7.50 it is half the price of somewhere like the Great Exhibition..

It may be half the price, but it's also half the quality, in my opinion.

Fine if you just want a filling meal, however.

Maybe so! But I'd rather pay ?7.50 for a cheapo roast than ?15 for an average one.

Especially when you can get a very good one (Crooked Well, Palmerston) for ?16 or so.

Haven't eaten in The Great Exhibition for a long time, but last time I had a roast there it was very good, definitely above average.

Maybe their standards have dropped.

Ate at the Herne Tavern recently and the food was so bad that we had our meals comped. It was truly awful! Some of it was actually not eatable AND non-edible. :-(
