keeping on topic, ages ago now but I was going to have my birthday drinks at the Cherry Tree when Chris & Antonia were there, I remember the buzz around it and was looking forward to giving the place another go. Had heard so so many good things about the food. Hope things work out for the new people working there but not going to place any bets.

used to go there years ago (1990s) when visiting my ex-friend (whose ex-wife had a catering stint at the pub when Thai food was fast becoming popular). She didn't last long there either. Dunno if it's the same people or not.was called something else, can't remember name.

I made some positive comments regarding The Cherry Tree at the start of this particular thread and was totally unaware of the negative history of the pub (oh, and the constant revolving doors for chefs at this establishment ~ this happens all the time in many public inns especially after the smoking ban made them a far harder proposition to create business). TCT is not in a position to compete with the likes of the other themed, 'Is it a gastro-pub, is it restaurant, is it a wine bar, does it specialise in craft beers', in my opinion as it does not have - geographically - the kudos of the Lordship Lane trend set and men in flip-flops' brigade.

It caters for locals (heaven forbid), the Sky Sport regulars, the only pub with a large gay contingent, and okay, the food wasn't brilliant. If any contributors lived in SE22 10 years or so and remembered the old spit-and-sawdust pubs since redeveloped. It's not that bad at all and certainly not stuck up.

AS for edcam's comment to my post:

Could the management perhaps consider a sign on the window, specifying that flip flops might be worn inside, but only when the temperature exceeds, say, 21 degrees?

I feel this would help keep 'the wrong crowd' out - and everybody happy.

I personally would prefer 25 degrees celsius but am willing to compromise. Can they not use the urinals though as accidents can sometimes occur by those wearing regulation footwear when standing next to these chaps; and can they make sure their grubby London toenails aren't anywhere near to be seen when I am enjoying a sub-standard pub lunch with my girlfriend. It's most off-putting to see this when you're tucking into a sticky toffee pudding created by the latest head chef who will probably be sacked next week and then moan that he/she was treated unfairly. I think I've said all I can on the matter and don't believe there was any sign of sarcasm in my comment, to boot. I am planning my next comment to be made on this forum to be considered 'offensive' by the administrator. As a passionate believer in free speech, I believe it's the right for one not only to offend, but also, and just as importantly, to be offended. Leave that one for another day ED people.

I think 25? is unreasonably high, but your concerns RE urine splashback are well-founded. Anyone who has worn lightly coloured trousers made of a particularly absorbent material will know of the dangers.

Given the standards of pubs round here, i'd almost be tempted.

Actually on that note, the pubs here make terrible use of space, have universally terrible bogs and woeful selection of beer, but live or die by the character of the bar staff and management, most of whom are gregarious, welcoming and utterly charming i must say.

If you are happiest with clientele you're comfortable with, then aim the pub that way and be happy, i see no issue with it.

But why aim for a different type of customer that you resent setting foot in your pub then ban them on trumped up charges because you don't like the cut of their pencil necked jib?

Until that circle is squared this cycle debate will continue, tediously, over and over and over again, ad nauseum, in perpetuity, etc.

It's been said on here before once or twice. its incredibly boring.

People turn up for late boozing after wedding reception, people buy booze, i get thrown out accused of drug taking*.

Everyone leaves never to return (much).

I actually got on very well with the bouncer who ejected me, but he just apologetically shrugged and said 'I'm only following orders guv' or words to that effect.

Indeed, I remember them doing the same to our mutural friend when he can out of the loo and sniffed (because he genuinely had a bit of a cold) and they immediately grabbed him and chucked him out. The drunken righteous outrage was hilarious!

I do have some cracking memories from the place back then though. When it was the only place in the area you could get a drink past midnight and dance to Hey Ya.
