SeanMacGabhann
Those lines from Hallelujah get me everytime - the whole song in fact. And I love when Buckley's version swings into The Smiths "I know it's over"Leoneard Cohen's original is one of those which is much worse than other's version but my fave is John Cale's version on Fragments of a Rainy Seasonok - another quote then:"yes I can love my fellow manbut I'm damned if I'll love yours"Sisters of Mercy.. Jah Lush
I think Keef, if we were to write all the lyrics out to our favourite top ten tunes it would take all day to read them. But I would suggest perhaps is to maybe just list the songs. Also, I can't believe theres no lyrics on here by the likes of Bob Dylan, Nick Cave, Lou Reed, Jagger & Richards, Lennon & McCartney all great lyricists but then I guess your demographic is for a younger generation than an old git like me.Cheers :)-D Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/490-top-ten-whatever/page/2/#findComment-11099 Share on other sites
Ant
Right then, branching out somewhat... I do love a bit of Gainsbourg. :)Briefly, for those who don't do French: he's dumping her, callously. The cad. The bit underlined translates as something along the lines of: yes, I'm sorry to tell you that I'm off, yes, I loved you, yes, but... He sings it in a very off-hand manner, quite glib almost. Oooh, those Frenchies, eh? Scoundrels! Keef
Not really Jah Lush, I put in a Leonard Cohen, a Pink Floyd, and a Squeeze lyric.... However, you've just reminded me that Wild Horses by the Stones is one of my fave all time songs, and the lyrics to that are beautiful!Childhood living is easy to doThe things you wanted I bought them for youGraceless lady you know who I amYou know I cant let you slide through my handsI watched you suffer a dull aching painNow you decided to show me the sameNo sweeping exits or offstage linesCould make me feel bitter or treat you unkindI know I dreamed you a sin and a lieI have my freedom but I dont have much timeFaith has been broken, tears must be criedLets do some living after we dieNever been a Dylan fan.... Jah Lush
Cheers Keith, point taken but check out Dylan, I didn't get into him until I was 32 and, I just love the Stones even if they have turned into parodies of their former selves but they still cut it live. mockney piers
Well, I'll happily argue that Dylan didn't become great until he'd spent a bit of time over here and was immersed in traditional folk and the burgeoning folk rock movement. To which end I'll offer up a slice of the classicsBallad of the sea - Classic English Folk" I walked alone in foggy dewJust me and my memoriesA voice out seaward beckons thruA whistle of love for me, for meA whistle of love for me.T'was two moons 'go her father stoleMy love away from meArranged to wed a soldier redMy love's gone 'cross the sea, the seaMy love's gone 'cross the sea.For ten days long our love grew strongShe swore her "love to thee"Each night up high on mountainsideShe'd whistle her love for me, for meShe'd whistle her love for me.Late one night, my fire alightAwaiting for her to seeMy wait was long, o' what could be wrongWhere could my true love be, love beWhere could my true love beA light 'cross waters latern glowWas all mine eyes could seeAnd from below noise drifted slowLike a 'gull come back from sea, from seaLike a 'gull come back from sea.Her song it haunts me still this dayNotes of uncertaintyIf heaven laughs at prayers of mineThen it never was to be, to beThen it never was to be."
