Due to this topic being excessively long, a new 2024 "New Shops in Dulwich / Peckham" has been opened here. Please continue the discussion there.

not a new shop opening but an established one closing.

I noticed that Luca's on Northcross road is closing down

there goes another independent trader.

Sad

Is it really? It always seems busy. That's incredibly sad, I love Luca's and they also bake amazing bread.

This is very sad. I will miss Luca’s.

Yes I agree, it always seems busy and their food is great.

There's a sign in the window saying they're selling stuff off.

I guess its another victim of the rise in energy costs/produce/etc etc.

I chatted to the owner the other day and he cited all those reasons, as well as Brexit meaning there are less tourists. Very sad indeed.

I think the whole restaurant needed work - was quite dated and depressing to be in.

The food wasn't good - not compared to some of the great turkish restaurants elsewhere (especially green lanes)

The food there used to be ok a long time back,  then  it really deteriorated.

Things like hummus and taramasalata tasted as if they  had come from cheap catering packs.

Don't know if it improved again, as I didn't go back.  Their take away shish kebabs were better than Kebab and Stab, but I stopped eating meat so I don't know whether they deteriorated as well.

Where Jaflong was on East Dulwich Road (next to Papa John’s) is now going to be another pizza place!

The pizza Joint.

quite a big refurb it seems - bumped into the owner as I was walking past a few weeks ago. Shutters down so suspect fairly close to finishing the interior

There's a new shop in Dulwich Village, next to Redemption Coffee and Megan's 🤮

It is called Maison Curate. Seems to be a candles, cushions and cardigans type of shop. Not really my thing but it looks nice enough

looks like they are doing both as you can still order a takeaway

Erics is a good example of 'build it and they will come'. As we all know, there is no shortage of bakeries on Lordship Lane and the surrounding area, and yet still people queue for hours outside Erics on the two days a week it is open to get a croissant. Why? Because of the quality.

I do not wish to see Lordship Lane overrun with chain stores, but I am afraid that is where we are headed unless independents up their game. Please take a leaf out of Erics' book - invest in what you are doing and offer something unique that is of quality. The same can be said of Toad bakery in Camberwell - queues out the door every weekend, with people travelling to sample the goods. I am not sure anyone could credibly argue the closure of Hissars is a great loss. It was an incredibly basic offering and the market has moved on.

To be clear, I am not advocating for more expensive businesses on the lane - ideally there would be a variety of shops and businesses for all budgets. But independents need to have a good think about why people are going off the lane and out of their way to queue for hours at some independent businesses, while other independent businesses that should benefit from the footfall on Lordship Lane are going bust.

Hisar has been awful for years, every time i walked past the doner looked like it had been going on the spit for months.

We could do with a proper Turkish kebab place, where people are eagerly inside ordering Doner Kebabs every night. You know that they are good when you see this.

The challenge is always that as soon as chains start moving in then rents increase and the independent's can't compete (chains can happily run a loss-leader in an area given they will have more profitable outlets elsewhere and often the attraction is brand building and delivery footprint). You hear increases in rent being cited by so many of the independents (Luca's for example which has always been a shining light for quality and popularity but they just can't make it work with the rent increases being imposed on them).

Actually, this is unlikely - most of the shop foot-prints are too small for most High St chain stores - although the restaurants are more compatible with size requirements. Chains are already - mainly - in the ones with sufficient space, so more are unlikely (although there will be changes - as M&S occupied Iceland's space).

    • So for the vast, vast majority of people their internet is access via wires (or fibre) supplied by openreach, virgin or one of the smaller providers like community fibre so there is a physical medium involved. However you can buy off-the-shelf 5G Routers that have a SIM card slot.  Put a 5G SIM card in it and you can then access the internet from your home devices via 5G.  Imagine hot-spotting your phone and sharing it.  Effectively that's what your doing. Rather than buy one, 3 (and I think EE) allow you to take out a contract for a 5G SIM and the router for around £20-25 a month. Speeds won't be as fast but I get around 80 gig bits download speed and it holds up fine for us. Thus the mobile providers gain a foothold in the "broadband" market. 3 offer a no-quibble 30 day guarantee so you can try it out and if you find your signal isn't strong or reliable enough you can take it back for no charge.
    • Me too, now and then it would be down to the exchange and an issue there.  Comparing what I have had done in the last 15 or so years with them, friends have had more issues with Sky, Virgin etc than I have ever had!  I moved to fibre a while ago with them, and, 'touchwood', everything has been great.
    • Very happy to give another recommendation for Dave - he did a super job on our bedroom recently fitting underlay and carpet. Really great finish and very reasonably priced plus a lovely guy!
    • With the current economic crisis, there are still plenty of people who will pay a fiver for a cake or upwards for a sandwich. Whether that's at Gail's or any other bakery - M&S included. I've just discovered the M&S Marmite sandwich which is a steal at £2.50 or something. Love their salads too. I rarely buy cakes - I make lots as I know what's in them, and it's infinitely cheaper
