Actually HMRC have long since been wise to the cash economy around builders in particular. There is now a specific onus on the customer to ensure they take precautions to ensure they are not participating in joint fraud.

That's the boring bit....far more fun is walking out of a branch on Lordship Lane with 25k in your jeans and hoping you won't get rolled.

Especially for Mick who well knows it's called the shadow economy. I've found the original piece I was thinking of...

Of course as Bob says just because you pay in cash doesn't mean anyone's avoiding tax...I've seen teams of Polish builders all get paid in fifties as well as get their PAYEE slips listing correct deductions.

I have MrBen, a few times. It actually doesn't take-up that much space, even in ?20's.

I have a new roof plus internal plastering 5 years ago. cash.

renovated a house in Wiltshire this summer. cash

renovating house in ED now. cash.

No cash left now obviously.

Queuing in the local branch of my bank recently I was amazed at the number of pensioners in front of me taking out four figure sums in an envelope. Muggings outside banks even in broad daylight aren't massively uncommon and its a chunk to lose that goes beyond what most personal insurance will cover.

You're right that it's not much space. But it's too much for the jeans pocket. And I don't have KK's "presence" so I always ended up stuffing it down my Calvins and hoped for the best.

MrB - I was referring to there is an onus on the customer - I have never seen that from HMRC - just checking you didn't know about something that I hadn't seen.

Agreed, it can be a worry. I carry a tool JIC...

I find a hunting waistcoat with loads of pockets useful, worn under a coat - you can stash a good wedge that way and not be 'carrying' anything obvious, as you stagger out of the branch like a drunkard, your knees barely coping with the weight of all that stinking cash.

    • I'd rather go to actual local Safer Neighbourhood Team meetings and see the whites of their eyes.  Ours in Peckham Rye Park ward (maps of areas the ward covers are on the police website; no idea about the new one!) used to be very well attended, but sadly now not so.  The local police of the SNT seem to change far too regularly so they never have a chance to really know the area and the people.  And the last meeting, held at the Tenants Hall of Brenchley Gardens (so right on the edge of the geographical area), was held with one day's notice.  Not good.
    • Friends of Peckham Rye Park sent emails to its members (do join if you can; it's useful) saying a few nights ago a fire was started on the SE22 side of the park by kids with fireworks.  Horrific.
