hi bawdy-nan,

How awful. No wonder you think are worse.

Hi peckhambog,

I helped organise a number of improvements for the junction of Underhill Road with Barry Road. Both Underhill Road sides had full entry treatments added (humps across the junction sides). Stop signs which required government approval - fortunately the rules were devolved by this government allowing local decision.

The remaining issue appears to be speed related along Barry Road. Officers have suggested no parking along Barry Road in both directions from this junction for about 100m. This would cause significant incovenience but improve sight lines. Improved sight lines often result in extra speeding so it appears self defeating. Officers advised on one of the site visits that it would be really hard to meet the criteria for full traffic lights. The lead officer has since retired but I doubt a change of view on this from remaining officers. The junction is partly signalised to some degree with the Pelican crossing.

Lets try and get average speed cameras in place - and the policy is that Barry Road is 20mph.

peckhambog, you ask "how many tragedies" etc. Regrettably, it is a fact,in certain parts of the country, that one of the criteria for a speed camera (or other traffic calming measures) installation is that a death MUST occur before one will be installed. I do not know if this applies in Southwark, perhaps JB can answer this.

I feel that speeding will not be reduced in built up town and city 30mph zones until we introduce a radical, and yes some would say draconian, change in the law. I feel we need a system whereby speeding in this instance is treated as follows:

1st offence: Relatively Substantial Fine eg: ?100. This is on the basis that anybody could "drift" over the limit by accident in a moment of loss of concentration, which, although I know is unacceptable, it does happen.

2nd offence: Short Duration Driving Ban eg: 3/6 months. Having had the benefit of the doubt as above, no excuses/reasons as the driver should have been wholly aware of their circumstances.

Further, the ability for the courts to go straight to sanction two for a first offence if the speeding was substantial eg:anything over 40mph on the basis of at those speeds you would have been aware of going to fast. Also, the normal licence endorsement of three points at a stage one and two, thus accruing six points toward any other possible driving ban.

Thoughts on this would be interesting.

The current signage indicates the speed limit is 30mph.

I certainly welcome a drop to 20mph with good signage and some enforcement to train users' behaviour.

Bloody hell :(

Living in Barry Road, I drive to work daily down to either Underhill or Upland junctions before I turn off. This week I was waiting patiently behind a bus just past the Goodrich junctions, I could see it was indicating to go, some silly prat behind me obviously thought I was just idling and decides to overtake both me and the bus just pulling out, forces a car travelling from the opposite direction to pull up sharply, cut in front of the bus who also pulls in sharply, waving his fists ( yes it was a he) at me and mouthing something. What was his problem, had he just waited a few seconds all this rage would not have been necessary. Unfortunately idiots like this - no end of traffic calming measures would change their behaviour regardless whether 20 or 30 mph limits
Speeding on Lordship Lane at the Upland Road junction and curve south to Forest Hill continues unabated. Why would anyone stop is they're not told to by an "authority". And so we wait for the next child or elderly person to die and send a tiny ripple in the placid calm of TFL and Southwark Council

    • What was he doing on the stage at Glastonbury? Or on the stage at the other concert in Finsbury Park? Grinning like a Cheshire cat whilst pissed and stoned 20 somethings on the promise of free internet sung-- Oh Jeremy Corbyn---  What were his policies for Northern mining towns with no jobs or infrastructure? Free Internet and university places for youngsters. What were his other manifesto pledges? Why all the ambiguity over Brexit?  I didn't like Thatcher, Blair or May or Tony but I respected them as politicians because they stood by what they believed in. I respect all politicians across the board that stick to their principles. Corbyn didn't and its why he got  annihilated at the polls. A socialist, anti imperialist and anti capitalist that said he voted for an imperialist and pro capitalist cabal. He refused to say how he'd vote over and over again until the last knockings. He did so to appease the Islington elite and middle class students he was courting. The same people that were screaming that Brexit was racist. At the same time the EU were holding black and Asian immigrants in refugee camps overseas but not a word on that! Corbyn created and courted a student union protest movement that screamed at and shouted down anyone not on the left . They claimed Starmer and the centre right of labour were tories. He didn't get elected  because he, his movement and policies were unelectable, twice. He turned out not to have the convictions of his politics and died on his own sword.    Reform won't win an election. All the idiots that voted for them to keep out Labour actually enabled Labour. They'll be back voting tory next time.    Farage wouldn't be able to make his millions if he was in power. He's a very devious shyster but I very much doubt he'd actually want the responsibility that governance requires.
    • The purge of hard left members that were part of Corbyn's, Mcdonnel's and Lansmans momentum that purged the party of right wing and centrist members. That's politics. It's what Blair did to win, its what Starmer had to do to win. This country doesn't vote in extreme left or right governments. That's partly why Corbyn lost  We're pretty much a centrist bunch.  It doesn't make it false either. It's an opinion based on the voting patterns, demography and statistics. Can you explain then why former mining constituencies that despise the tories voted for them or abstained rather than vote for Corbyns Labour?  What is the truth then? But he never got elected!!! Why? He should have been binned off there and then. Why he was allowed to hang about is an outrage. I hold him party responsible for the shit show that we've had to endure since.
    • Depends on what the Barista says doesnt it? There was no physical confrontation with the driver, OP thinks she is being targetted when she isnt. These guys work min wage under strict schedules so give them a break unless they damage your stuff
    • CPR Dave, attendance records are available on Southwark's website. Maggie Browning has attended 100% of meetings. Jon Hartley has attended 65%.
