Wouldn't mind a pub in the area that showed the football with the volume on the tv turned up. Rather than showing football with a ELO soundtrack (EDT) or Van Morrison (Cherry Tree) which I find a bit odd.


Nothing wrong with Antic pubs as long as the bar staff aren't trained by whomever does the recruiting/training at the EDT. oh lordy.


Wetherspoons were interested in the Cherry Tree but the outgoing landlord wasn't interested in selling to them at any price I am given to understand.

Really? Do you know why not?


How nice for the outgoing landlord to be able to turn down an offer "at any price"!!

I was never told why, Sue. Just that at the time he was talking to others but had knocked Wetherspoons back as he had done "many times before"

I'm in The EDT most nights and they have football with the sound on most nights.


They have 3 screens and sometimes have more than one game on.

It is probably the best pub to drink and watch football.


Never heard ELO being played during the game or any other time for that matter..


Only complaint I have is the area manager has banned Millwall games.

Well they must have me microchipped to set the ELO mp3 player off. Over the past month or two our favourite brummie Sgt Pepper tribute band have been on nearly everytime I have been in there. I notice these things because I 'effin hate ELO.


Yes, I think they do have the tv volume up for some football games but certainly not all. I certainly frequent the place enough to know they don't always. Unless they have had a recent change of policy.


What have they got against Millwall?

Was put off the Castle due to it being sadly frequented by a formerly pony-tailed buffoon that I would gladly have punched. Not been in the Castle at all this season. Should give it another try I suppose.

I don't think that is true. Believed to be heading off to the Golden Lion in Sydenham.

The ponytail uses the EDT too.


The Castle is still the best place locally to watch the football. The George Canning is pretty good too but if The Cherry Tree lot get their hands on that my visits there will be even more infrequent than they already are.


Having said that I hate the idea of some crappy Aussie bar in East Dulwich. Better the devil you know. You still have the choice to take you custom elsewhere.

Rodger the dodger Brown. Don't you work at the Cherry Tree as an odd job man. You know full well that the George Canning was just a rumour to stop people knowing that they took the Golden Lion in Sydenham on Monday. And Millage

You are wrong. They were desperate to sell to Wetherspoons so they could upset the people of East Dulwich?!! But Wetherspoons turned them down for being too small.

But a 'chain' is still a chain, right? I was merely pointing out in reply to you that some decent poubs are chain pubs.

      Lordship Lane has two dry cleaners, three pizza places and an Italian selling pizza, two burger places, three bakeries, two hardware (ish, I'm thinking AJ Farmer here), God knows how many coffee and charity shops, two Italians, three nail salons, five wine shops... Where was the abject outrage when Dynamic Vines opened up literally next door to Cave de Bruno? But I don't see his customers decamped next door - no, those stalwarts are still out in force every night.  In Roman times all businesses were clustered by product. It's what kept prices down. Same in any market you go to abroad, they're all selling the same things next to each other.  Why is everyone being so hard on this new place? It's called healthy competition - you can't curtail the expansion of your business on the basis you that might hurt someone else's.

      In restaurant terms I would say a chain manifests when the motivation is no longer “we are a couple/small group who have an idea and love food” who open a restaurant, them another and then a few more BUT THEN PIVOT to “we need capital to rollout out new restaurants so we have leveraged the help of the following investors”  that is the moment it stops being about the chef/food on the plate and becomes about the spreadsheet  so it is POSSIBLE  for a restaurant to have 50 branches and not be a chain - but I can’t think of any  I don’t know chango - by based on the number of outlets they appear to have just crossed/or are about to cross that line
