Hi all,

My brother and his wife are soon expecting the arrival of their second baby boy. For their first born I made up a big basket of odds and ends I was assured by a friend would be very useful: basic medicines, nappies, sponges, bath thermometer, simple bath products, plain grows and a few teething toys, including the infamous Sophie.

Second time round and they're sorted. Has anyone got any recommendations as to what they've found useful? I don't want to add to them them being inundated with little outfits (especially when they've got hand-me-downs from big brother) and toys.

Thanks in advance,

Louise

Great question. For our second boy we appreciated items that our first child had worn out, but that we could not justify buying new ourselves. This includes clothes, but also teethers, soft toys, board books and bath toys.

Also, if it's feasible, the offer of a few hours of babysitting is always welcome.

Great ideas - thank you.

Yes I would absolutely babysit for them but they live in the West Midlands so not all that simple/convenient. I can always write an I.O.U. for when I'm visiting though.

Not sure how my SIL would feel about being given booze if she's breast-feeding - might be a bit "salt-in-wound" but I'm sure my brother would appreciate it!

I found nice little cutlery sets we were given by one friend after we had our second and third children were really useful gifts - the sort of thing you find yourself having to buy when you're weaning, even when you've got other children.

Something nice for Mum is a great idea. I was given some Graze boxes when I had my 3rd child, which were a brilliant present.

Breast feeding mothers can drink, so I wouldn't worry about torturing your sister-in-law! Unless she chooses not to of course.

If they are within delivery distance of a Cook Shop, you could think about one of their packages. They do family size great quality ready meals that can be stuck in the freezer and cooked from frozen.

Wow what a response. There are some truly great ideas in here. I got my SIL a mothers box from Neil's Yard last time round so I think I'll try to illicit if she liked anything in particular.

Food and cleaners sound like a great idea, with a blanket for the baby perhaps.

Great ideas - thanks all!

We got a voucher for a family portrait for my brother in law after the birth of their second child, managed to find a local deal which included a CD of images so they didn't end up paying a fortune for prints, they really liked it. Another idea is a manicure/pedicure for your sister in law - can take baby along once she feels up to it.

What about a voucher for a baby massage course if she has some childcare for her firstborn? Depends on budget of present also...

some really lovely advice here.

im not sure about the gift for the mum - unless you know what she likes.

its really kind but you have so little time with 2 and unless you have childcare its impossible to actually go for a mani/pedi etc... having said that someone gave me some nice hand moisturiser which was good.

definitely yes on the treat for the older child.

and i really appreciated nice things for my younger baby that i didn't feel justified in buying as really we had enough hats/babygros/ etc - was nice to get a couple of cute outfits that i didn't have to feel guilty about buying! e.g. a nice blanket, babygro, etc.

I'd second the point about beauty treatments. My husband bought me a voucher for a spa day and it became a bit of a joke that it ended up being more stressful to keep calling them and begging for extensions than any stress relieved by the treatment!

    • What was he doing on the stage at Glastonbury? Or on the stage at the other concert in Finsbury Park? Grinning like a Cheshire cat whilst pissed and stoned 20 somethings on the promise of free internet sung-- Oh Jeremy Corbyn---  What were his policies for Northern mining towns with no jobs or infrastructure? Free Internet and university places for youngsters. What were his other manifesto pledges? Why all the ambiguity over Brexit?  I didn't like Thatcher, Blair or May or Tony but I respected them as politicians because they stood by what they believed in. I respect all politicians across the board that stick to their principles. Corbyn didn't and its why he got  annihilated at the polls. A socialist, anti imperialist and anti capitalist that said he voted for an imperialist and pro capitalist cabal. He refused to say how he'd vote over and over again until the last knockings. He did so to appease the Islington elite and middle class students he was courting. The same people that were screaming that Brexit was racist. At the same time the EU were holding black and Asian immigrants in refugee camps overseas but not a word on that! Corbyn created and courted a student union protest movement that screamed at and shouted down anyone not on the left . They claimed Starmer and the centre right of labour were tories. He didn't get elected  because he, his movement and policies were unelectable, twice. He turned out not to have the convictions of his politics and died on his own sword.    Reform won't win an election. All the idiots that voted for them to keep out Labour actually enabled Labour. They'll be back voting tory next time.    Farage wouldn't be able to make his millions if he was in power. He's a very devious shyster but I very much doubt he'd actually want the responsibility that governance requires.
    • The purge of hard left members that were part of Corbyn's, Mcdonnel's and Lansmans momentum that purged the party of right wing and centrist members. That's politics. It's what Blair did to win, its what Starmer had to do to win. This country doesn't vote in extreme left or right governments. That's partly why Corbyn lost  We're pretty much a centrist bunch.  It doesn't make it false either. It's an opinion based on the voting patterns, demography and statistics. Can you explain then why former mining constituencies that despise the tories voted for them or abstained rather than vote for Corbyns Labour?  What is the truth then? But he never got elected!!! Why? He should have been binned off there and then. Why he was allowed to hang about is an outrage. I hold him party responsible for the shit show that we've had to endure since.
    • Depends on what the Barista says doesnt it? There was no physical confrontation with the driver, OP thinks she is being targetted when she isnt. These guys work min wage under strict schedules so give them a break unless they damage your stuff
