Sorry this is a bit of a dull question, but I figured you guys would know!

I have solid wood worktops in my kitchen and I hate them, they always look tatty and worn, even though they are three years old and I have oiled them (and I chose them - should have known better).

Is it possible to retrofit new work surfaces? Is it a massive/expensive job?

If its possible what do you recommend - I need something hardwearing and hassle free - I'm thinking quartz?

Yes you can-- we did that for the kitchen in our old flat. Its not terribly expensive but of course that depends on what you use. For the retrofit we used granite but in our new kitchen we have quartz. We sourced both from Affordable Granite which are very good value and I can attest that the work is very good and lasts.

Quartz isn't cheap but the cost will really depend on the size of your kitchen. Their prices including installation prices and options are available on the website.

Good luck.

Hubbie has fitted many worktops. He suggests bamboo (the 'green' option), which is easy to fit and not expensive. Granite is super hardwearing, but more difficult to fit (and v expensive).

Personally I like tiles, but I might be a bit of a weirdo... (DH says they're not hygienic -- since when does he ever clean the worktops?!)

Anyhoo, yes you can definitely replace kitchen work surfaces! It's a couple of days labour, plus your materials fees.

xx

    • Actually, if it was factory fitted then it's location would be documented. It's the fact that it can be fitted in different places which means that it's difficult for thieves to locate.
    • OK, good suggestion and it appears that the after-market price is about £260. But if that that was fitted ex-factory then the cost would be substantially less and certainly a small fraction of the price of a high-end car.
