When the Plough was called the Goose & Granite, the bus stop there remained "The Plough" and I seem to remember that there was a stop on Streatham Hill called "The Cat's Whiskers", years after that club became The Studio, then The Ritzy and finally, Caesars.

Stop on Kirkdale still called the Woodman, even though the Woodman sadly closed and became a feckin estate agents a good couple of years back.

People just tend to think of places by landmarks even afyer they're gone. I still think of the crossroads by Peckham Rye as Kings Arms even though it hasn't been that for a very very long time.

Bricklayers Arms.

Forest Hill Tavern was of course once the Royal Oak.

My fave is the Sun in the Sands, as on the radio when they report on traffic congestion the Blackwall Tunnel is always backed up to there. And then one day I found there was a pub called the Sun in the Sands (think it may now be shut); how excited was I.

Anyone for pub cricket?

I still call the junction of PR/EDR 'King's Arms'. Historic association with a hostelry going back to days of old. I often wonder if had the original pub survived the blitz would the building still be a pub today? Probably some gastro joint.

Louisa.

One thing I love about London (any city, I guess) is how geography gets distorted. Towit, you have one geographical feature - a hill - but depending on your direction of approach it's known as Dog Kennel Hill, Champion Hill, Denmark Hill, etc.

I feel like a champion at the top when I cycled up it

Yeah most probably, and run by 'blow ins' ... whatever next, jeez! . on a different subject - 'the next bus stop is closed' . How can a bus stop be 'closed' ? , out of use, not in use , that's fine but not closed - sorry to be a pedant

But surely you don't want every single bus stop on Dog Kennel Hill to be announced as "Dog Kennel Hill"? That wouldn't be terribly useful to people who don't know the area, would it?

It's announced as "Champion Hill" because it's the nearest stop to Champion Hill.

Same as the stop in Lordship Lane nearest to North Cross Road is announced as "North Cross Road" rather than "Lordship Lane" :))

ETA: Or do you mean that they are announcing it in the wrong place, in which case ignore the above :))

And Cobb's Corner, Sydenham. Named after Cobb's Department Store.

    • @first mate  just Google the Green's policies and AI should summarise.  For sustainable transport this includes more initiatives to get people out of their cars as you would expect.  I've always been broadly in favour of their environmental policies, although feel they should go further on culture change. Some of their national policies are bonkers and/or unrealistic - as are most of Reform's.  Historically fringe parties could come up with nonsense, as they will never govern.  Of course whilst I don't expect that Polanski will ever be PM that other bloke could be.  Worrying times, particularly if the Greens split the centre/left vote.  It would be better if One Nation Tories could split the centre vote (and drag some of those on the right), but they don;t have a lot of influence in the current party. One particularly bonkers policy was one element of the Greens who wanted us out of Europe, not because of Europe being pro market/capitalism but because we needed a recession, deindustrialise, so we would all go back to the middle ages.  Or something along those lines.  I lost some friends because of this. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03y5trr#:~:text="Protectionism against developing countries%2C savage austerity in,the case for either remain or leave. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/jun/08/eu-reform-green-brexit
    • I've planted a meadow out front, it needs a lot of work.  It's lovely until August and then grotty until the next spring as once the flowers have died back it doesn't have a lot going for it.  Clover is the last one to flower.  It will get admiring looks when in bloom. I laugh quite loud when I pass one neighbour with plastic grass, not only is it dead to nature it is not even laid well,   I should be crying.
    • Andy did a number of jobs for me and was very reasonably priced. He's very helpful, arrives on time, pays attention to detail and a nice man. I'll be using him again and recommending him to my friends.
    • A Y13 student of Art at The Charter School North Dulwich left their A3 art portfolio on the 37 bus after school on Friday 13 February - travelling from North Dulwich to East Dulwich.  TFL and the bus garage have been contacted but do not have it.  It is a large A3 transparent bag with a black art folder inside.  The student's name is inside the portfolio and the bag is stamped with the school name.  If anyone happens to have picked up the portfolio or has any leads please do contact [email protected]  We are really keen to get our student's work back safely!
