Well Balfe bikes very kindly let my son make up a new bike from spare parts they had there, thank you Balfe bikes!!!

But now the bike has had parts stripped off of it and the bolts strewn across Forest Hill Road. Someone must have seen something and I am asking all of you forumites for help please.

an example:

Colleague's bike left locked overnight on Brick Lane outside my old office.

Morning after had been picked clean of everything except the frame.

All of those parts, though seemingly worthless, can be sold.

It is free money.

A bike out in the still of night with no passersby is a no-brainer.

Hate to say it but you don't leave bikes out overnight in London and expect anything of value to be there the next morning.

If you're leaving a bike for any length of time I would get 2 Kryptonite 'Fahgeddaboutit' locks, lock both wheels and saddle together, superglue all screw joints (you can remove this with solvent lateR)

Yep - if you have a bike stolen proceed directly to Brick Lane the following sunday and there's a good chance it'll be there.

Or check legalised 'fence' Gumtree.

Didn't work in my case unfortunately. I think the 'traders' thought I was an undercover copper. Actually, they should have known I wasn't cuz when I phoned the police to get a crime report number the police officer/worker advised me to go to Brick Lane the following Sunday to look for my bike. I did think "well, why don't you lot go down there if you know stolen goods are being openly sold".

Lilolil,

I am surprised that bike has lasted there so long!!! :-S For starters, the tree you refer to is only an inch thick. It's a wonder someone hasn't taken a penknife to the tree before now to free the bike and take the whole thing home with them. Secondly, as far as I am concerned, if i left my bike outside over night, I would expect to find pieces missing from it in the morning, especially when the lock is only tied to the frame of the bike. They can easily remove the wheels, saddle, nuts, bolts... etc... It was with no surprise when i read that someone made off with it a few weeks ago.

This is London. Anything left out on the street after the sun goes down is fair game... unfortunately that is the reality of living in London.

    • But when was it posted?! I haven't posted any this year. I can't bring myself to pay the exorbitant cost of the stamps, and at least I can sort of honestly blame it on illness. If I can't hand deliver them, I send e-cards. I know it's not the same, but it's very much easier. And as for the people who still send pages of closely handwritten letters .... very admirable in terms of the hours it must have taken them to write them,  but they remind me of those spoofs eg x has just passed all their many important exams with the highest marks possible, y has just walked round the world in a week, z has just become the first person ever to be knighted twice, we are about to fly off for our fifteenth exotic holiday this year ....... Or else (or sometimes and) they are full of who has had what illnesses and accidents and other catastrophes. Is this just my relatives and distant friends? Am I somehow attracting these reams of handwritten paper?
    • Oh, I didn't know that! I didn't move here till 1991 (I think) but the NCR incarnation must have been around that time? Unless my failing memory is even worse than I thought it was, sob.
    • I just googled, and apparently there's another branch of the Soho Street Govinda's  in Theobald's Road. I had no idea.
    • yes that's the one!  it was (nearly) harmless fun to get the un-initiated to put the coin in for you i also seem to remember that the Hanway Street place was called Govinda's.  it was vegetarian, vegan even - but it was much more palatable fare than the standard Hare Krishna stuff.  I also used to go tot he Indian Y - which I remmber discussing on the EDF some eyars ago.  And then the first Wagamama opened off Russell Street
