KK what's different about you banging on about how crap the area was twenty years or more ago with your rant above about pervy salesmen in clothes shops, avoided pubs and no-one visiting. All of which (as I'm sure you know) isn't the entire truth. And me saying it's not all rosey now either?

Quids what unpleasant labels have I put on anyone in this thread? I've not singled out any particular group of people at all. I made an observation that people come here to spend time in average restaurants, I don't think that's entirely untrue. Some people have and will continue to do that, because they believe articles in magazines and estate agent articles singing the praises of a pretty average London suburb. I am sorry if I come over as "chippy", but I can assure you I have no insecurities or feelings of inferiority at all. Just pointing the obvious.

Well I'm not rough and I used the Foresters. It was a bit rough round the edges and it was not

important that people did not travel from Putney to drink there.

I had some good nights there with good people. There was the occasional scrap, over in 30 seconds.

Nothing has changed on that front at The Bishop which also has had a few more serious flare ups.

As to E.D. being a Shithole.. Yes it was...

But it was OUR Shithole..

Wow, just caught up on this. Couple of observations.

ED has never had a load of nail shops and fast food places.

K&W has never been the best kebab shop in the area, Yilmaz kicked it's arse, and then Hizar took over and did the same.

Foxy definitely should sell up and move somewhere that makes him happy (not Penge).

The Bishop is shit.

The Evening Standard is a pointless rag.

ED was never a shit hole as such, but it was exceedingly non descript and after Sainsburys opened, for a short while at least, fairly down trodden. That new places started to open and the area managed to reinvent itself a little is no bad thing.

My previous post btw was a little mischievous, but I am (like many others I'm sure) getting bored of this whole debate.

Otta no-ones calling ED a shitehole (I'm not anyway), I was including the list of descriptions that I invariably here on EDF.

I've been here 25 yrs and loved every minute.

Things change, thank God. Otherwise we'd still be taking a bucket to the nearest stream (down by the roundabout want it ?) for our water.

However, some people grow old and embrace change, others get stressed by it and deny it's right to occur.

So you actually enjoy living somewhere that you don't like? Because let's be honest, you really don't like ED anymore. You might say it's the people and businesses that you don't like, but for better or worse, those things ARE the area.

I've never hidden the fact that for me ED had gone a wee bit too far in the last two or three years, but that's just me, I'm still fond of the old girl. But for you foxy it's just relentless negativity.

And yet you're not interested in moving somewhere more like the ED you used to love.

Don't get me wrong, some of the changes are for the better. I love the extra pedestrian crossings on LL just for starters. But let's not get carried away and start saying it's the new this or the new that. Otta I've considered a move a few times, StraferJack knows all about my mission to find a two up/two down in the Home Counties. I just love the convenience of this place.

If we were refering to crap dangerous areas in the 80s and 90s I think ED would have been way down any crime hotspot lists, Peckham however...

I like living here. That's why I stay here.

I do not feel the need to continually harp on about the things in E.D. I do like.

If I'm ill I go to the Doctor.

I don't go to the Doctor to let him/her know when I am well.

And parts of Brockley were proper rough. New Cross always had some interesting characters and loads of squats.

I used to drink/ work in The Wickham Arms Upper Brockley rd back in the early eighties.

Used to get my Kebab on Brockley Cross and get a cab from Duke Cars where I was affectionately known as 'Dulwich' .

I was rolled there (Brockley Cross) one night and my Keys and Credit cards taken.

Went to Brockley Nick where the Police told me they knew who might be involved and gave me a lift home.

I usually had no problems and wasn't hurt. Three guys just went through my pockets. No mobile phones back then.

I go upto Brockley quite a bit (love the caf up there on the parade opposite second hand car dealership). With the overground addition and the good housing stock the changes in the last five years have been fairly rapid and sustained. Deptford and New Cross seem the same to me, and I do like that about the area.

I had one set-to in there where one 'regular' challenged me in the bog.

That's just plain wrong !

There was (for non-regulars) a kind of sense of menace, personally I'm OK with a bit of edge but I've met people who didn't want the aggro.

KK that's the trouble a lot of the atmosphere has gone from local pubs now. I'm not saying aggro is ideal, but it does add to the character of a venue if you get a few bruiser locals glued to the bar monitoring and intimidating non-regulars. Surely that's half the charm? Id rather that than a bunch of people not talking to anyone.

Was the regular floorshow and scrap.. Just a bit of light Cabaret.

Same as the Foresters. Always the same people. Locals who I knew so they did not do me any harm.

No one really go hurt..

Guy on the piano stopped playing and the landlord took down the mirror behind the bar.

Like the OK Corral.. Over in minutes then everyone just carried on drinking.

There was Mr Biscuit who was elderly gentleman who fed us .. biscuits.

The place died when it became the Bishop.

Exactly foxy, no one has lived until they've been to a proper boozer with colourful locals and a bit of 'argy-bargy'. Most of our local pubs are bit bland now I feel.
