Oh..... so not "any" old journalist then? How do you know which are reputable and which are not?!?!? How does a "fact checker" check the facts are correct? Presumably first hand only and under strict lie detector present conditions?

Lucky the Courts rules on evidence are not so strict!

I think you're missing the point.

Papers - multiple points of view. Care taken to ensure accuracy. Libel laws.

Person on messageboard I've never met - could be wrong. No incentive to check accuracy of posting. Can misrepresent fact.

This thread has morphed into something vaguely ridiculous, I was only saying I take most / all of what I read on here with a pinch of salt (more so that I would a newspaper) - I'm sure this crime was very serious etc etc - er, back to the thread.

It was in the Southwark News (Tuesday 7th May) on the opposite page to the Dulwich Swine Flu article in the Dulwich and West Norwood edition but no mention of it in the online edition. Woman of 27 (or 28) was slashed with a knife and her bag and mobile were taken. Attacked from behind as she was walking along Melbourne Grove. Her attacker apparently ran up Dog Kennel Hill following the attack. From what I can remember the article said the attacker was male, black and approx 30 years of age and I think about 6' tall. One of the bar staff from The Vine was interviewed and stated that he had seen the police cars and ambulances when he finished his shift. She is recovering in Kings College Hospital.

Yes valid but given the situation not necessary. Sometimes people post complete rubbish on here but given the situation, context and tone there was no reason for anyone to expect that post to have been a fabrication.

There is plenty of disingenuous nonsense about foaming at the mouth, crack addicts roaming the streets with machetes. But a sincere sounding post about assault with a deadly weapon is not something people generally just make up.

What Brendan said.

If you read the context of the question asked and the response given I'm amazed that anyone could come to the conclusion that the post was made up.

If we adopted the only-accept-it-when-verified-by-multiple-sources criteria, then wouldn't the vast majority of threads be titled "Something may of happened...."
