I think there are relatively few people who actively subvert the system, but there is an unhealthy obsession amongst a sizeable minority with getting into "the best school", hence the endless discussions of Heber vs Goodrich vs St Johns, and the frankly insane level of competition for entry to JAGS and Alleyns at 4 y.o. However, most of the posters on the thread in the Family Room are only concerned about getting a place in an adequate i.e. non-failing school that is practical to get to. As has already been observed, both on this thread and others, the reason why so many ED parents have not ahcieved that relatively modest aspiration is Southwark's conscious decision to ignore demographic shifts within the borough.

"I think there are relatively few people who actively subvert the system"

I have a fairly small circle of friends / acquaintences but when my son applied for The Charter school 7 years ago I could name from first hand experience half a dozen people who cheated/ lied/ manipulated the system to get a place.

In fact I think it's fair to say that if you didn't take such action you were deemed to be failing your child by your lack of effort.

At primary school level I knew fewer people taking such action but again could certainly point to 4 or 5.

What I think such people fail to realise is that they are not just " doing the best " for their child ,but pushing other people out. We were very high on the waiting list for the Charter ( single digits ) and would probably have been offered a place had it not been for the 6 people obtaining places by deceit.

    • Can any super techy people advise on this:  I have connected a soundbar to the TV with an HDMI cable into the HDMI ARC socket.  The soundbar works with the TV but when I switch to Netflix or other media that come through a virgin box, the sound disappears completely.  I can then only get the sound back on the TV by unplugging the soundbar from the TV. The virgin box only has one HDMI socket which is used to connect to the TV so can't connect the soundbar to the virgin box by cable. Any ideas on how to make this work or recommendations for a TV wizard to contact? Thanks.
    • Thank you all SO much for the suggestions.  I didn't expect such a helpful and well considered response. Our plans changed and in the end I didn't try any of them but I certainly will in the future.  You don't know how grateful I am for the help.. The strain and effort involved in dining out because of the background noise really puts me off . I do have hearing aids but they aren't a great help. And in fact magnify many of them associated sounds in eating establishments.
    • Jafar lives up to his 5/5 reviews.  A great job well well done. Dismantled the boiler replaced the part and everything put back together and working.  I can only agree with all his excellent reviews.
    • I know I shouldn't bite, but .... Would you like to give some  specific examples of exactly why you consider this orange faced  narcissist with the apparent  mental capacity of a gnat (that's probably being unfair to gnats) and a clearly rapidly declining memory  the "best US president of the last 50 years"?
