  1. Excellent re-dedication service today. Very good that the Roll was read as part of the service. Thank you to all who organised this. MacRoban
  2. Why has the "Chair" deleted its last post? A second bad move.
  3. Yes, I used to buy my puncture rubber patches and glue from them.
  4. I referenced the NIESR graph because I think it is a useful visual tool. The NIESR report also has tables which undermine the commentary. The widely used definition of a recession started life as a political fix in the USA. Two consecutive quarters of falling GDP is a recession. One quarter of falling GDP followed by one quarter of GDP growth is not a recession. That is self-evidently silly. The point of the NIESR graph is that it shows the cumulative fall in GDP. I don't agree that one quarter of GDP growth leaving the cumulative fall in GDP at about 5.4% means the recession has ended.
  5. I think this chart is useful in tracking: Declines in UK GDP I am aware of the arguments about how GDP is calculated. The blue line is the minor reduction in GDP in 1990-1993 which some young people call a "recession". Anyone born after 1959 has not been through a real recession as an adult. I don't know how well prepared these young people are for a continuing recession. My gut reaction is that the GDP reduction may trough at -10%. Thereafter that black line may wobble along the horizontal for a long time. I hope I an wrong.
  6. > 1. Person can be nearly dead, dying, or easily pass for dead, as in obscure. Silly rule. All of us are dying. Some of us are closer to death than others and know it. Some of us are closer to death than others and don't know it.
  7. Raise your eyes, jester, and look at the phantom.
  8. !!!! I almost agree with ????. I'd add three supplementaries: [1] Do you have a target retirement date? [2] Do you want to be debt-free by that date? [3] How risk adverse are you to not achieving [1] and [2]? And now back on topic... For ????: You've opened the can of worms of interest rate and inflation differentials - a subject for another thread. Based on your quoted 4% differential do you think that the current base rate would be 3.25% or 6.5% without the current aggresive market manipulation?
  9. Apologies for going off-topic, PeckhamRose.
  10. Ideal Homes is not a reliable source. The bandstand was on Peckham Rye. Where you say Peckhan Rye Park is located depends on how far you want to (or can) go back in history. Camberwell Vestry was a relatively modern political innovation. Peckham Rye Park is (although I have not checked the bounday clauses) on the land of Friern Manor.
  11. My "prediction" is for 6%-8.5% 10% and 15% are suggested bad and worst case stress testing scenarios for womanofdulwich. Base rate peaked at 17% in November 1979 when there were problems with the UK economy as I am sure you will remember. [Edited for simplification]
  12. You are all wrong. Peckham Rye Park is in Friern.
  13. I would be cautious about introducing a local history section. It's only a minority interest. It might add a spurious air of authenticity. There are many local history posts which have been mis-informed, mis-remembered, or michievious. I'm still waiting for someone to post about Caesar's Camp near Dawson Heights.
  14. The Crystal Palace High Level Branch was electrified (third rail) on 12 July 1925 and from then passenger services were by Southern Railway electric multiple units. Crystal Palace Low Level Station got its electrification in 1929.
  15. Looks like another piece of low quality journalism to me. The original Sunday Times article was bad enough. Sunday Times article - with reader comments.
  16. As we enter the New Austerity and return to traditional values I wondered whether we should reinstate the annual East Dulwich Beauty Queen contest. From careful reading of the East Dulwich Forum I know that there are sufficient young men would would volunteer for the panel of judges. It is less clear that the large number of young women who are competent and efficient organisers would have the spare time to do the organisation. The competition could be held as part of the late Spring Goose Green Fair and take place under the East Dulwich Forum banner.
  17. Oh dear, did you really fall for that, Mick Mac? Next time you walk down Lordship Lane from your elevated position why don't you raise your eyes and look at the architecture above ground floor level? You might spot some Victorian street furniture remnants you can add to my thread of a couple of years ago.
