Cant see a member of the House of Lords being able to become PM in the 21st Century.

It sounds like the Labour party has accepted defeat in the next election, barring a miracle. So why change leader now? Let Gordon limp on to electoral defeat, use him as a scape goat for all the Party's ills and get rid of him. Then stand back for an almighty cat fight between the Blairites and the Brownites which may take years to finish.

No in a word, but he would technically be very good. It must be frustrating for him to see GoBro as a character in charege, ToBla was so much (love/hate him)better, I mean he had the 'schtick" required, the patter as such. It's like having your uncle in charge here, we know he means well but sh*t he's dull, dull, dull.

I can't see Labour accepting defeat at the next election being a good move Michael - it might be at least 2 terms before they get in again if the tories ride the upturn in the economy.

If I were them I'd pursue a change of leader now and hope for signs of a quick pick up in the economy before the next election. They might have an outside chnace of getting in again with a new leader but no chance with Brown after this weeks events.

Mandelson - a consumate dissembler who only ever answers the question he wanted to be asked and not the question asked. Does that make a good politician or a cynical liar?

Thought the interview was a score draw and would love to have heard what was said between Andy & Mandy once the microphones were switched off. Andrew Marr is a left leaning journalist - he tried to get Mandelson to acknowledge the reported levels of frustration and anger within the Cabinet, PLP and wider party. I think though, in his heart, he knew even before the interview started that he would not lay a real glove on him.

I doubt Brown will be replaced as leader before the next election, no matter what individual party members might think of him. Another leader? Too much political grist to the other party's mills I'd think.

I reckon they'll butch it out with crossed fingers and hope that things can only get better that can be taken credit for at the next election.

But whatever happens, political pundits/experts/soothsayers both amateur and professional will constantly change their predictions/forecasts/guesses to suit the circumstances before the next election.

And won't they be lucky that for the most part, that we don't remember their steely-eyed predictions of what should/could/will be done every week until the 'fish and chip paper' day. Unless we have Private Eye to remind us.

As William Goldman said about people who claimed to be able to predict trends in the film industry 'Nobody KNOWS anything'

Be wonderfully ironic if a peer became leader of the Labour don't you think?

    • This is so helpful, everyone, thank you. @green bean Yes we have just (as of yesterday) installed the same external blinds you mention! We already had blackout blinds and we now have the external awnings too. Of course that will guarantee the end of the summer sunshine but I can see that they're going to be helpful as they let the light through but not the glare of the sun - I'm fed up of working in darkness with both the blackout blinds closed on sunny days. We'll see how we go with those for a bit but I reckon we'll get a couple of quotes from the other recommendations in case we end up going the whole hog. @penfold Love the idea of getting solar+batteries to offset the electricity usage so will look into that.  Thanks, all.
    • Yes Sally, I've emailed him several times since Xmas. I don't contact Councillors frequently but when I've done so over the years, I've found them generally engaged and responsive. It's unprecedented to just be ignored and, regardless of the query I'm raising, that's worrying from the point of view of  our local democratic voice. Its a Councillors role to represent local people! A different thread on here made reference to a lack of response from one of our ward councillors and, since there are only two, I'm guessing it's the same one. I'm following up my own concern separately but I'm asking on here about whether others have had the same problem. I'd like to think it's a one-off but, increasingly, I suspect it's not. Hope that gives a bit more context!
