Oh Alan I do recall you. You live in the former council owned estate serving as a dividing line/wall between civility and the bit of Camberwell we must demolish for the suggested park and ride, yes? I forget your name for it but it was marvelous.

As for Tory being about self-interest, perhaps it is. But it is also about personal responsibility, even if it may lack compassion. I do bore of hearing so little about how individuals are to blame and instead the Government. Such arguments are generally couched with: 'Not that I don't think what happened is horrible and the person should be punished, BUT....'

What are you doing back here anyway, Alan?

Are you on a temporary ban from Camberwell Online?

I feel I ought to say - there have been a few changes round here in your absence. You can't just waltz in, take over the steam press and expect to be Top Dog again..

Couldn't agree more! In my experience this applies to many Tory voters. Reminds me of watching Boris on 'Who Do You Think You Are.' Having discovered that he is related to the royal family he somehow managed to conclude that it just shows how random everything is & how much social mobility there is in this country. Interesting.

James - you're pandering to prejudice, and an old and tired prejudice at that.

You clearly haven't met the Conservative voters and supporters I have ? I met a number recently on the estates ? Denmark Hill Estate & Pelican Estate when canvassing with colleagues who had not a pin stripe to share between them. For example there?s Alice, who founded and runs ?Women Of Africa? a charity based in Camberwell, she works to empower African parents to integrate better by understanding UK social, health and education systems. There?s Janet and her husband ? from Sierra Leone they campaigned for the Tories in recent elections, Oliver ? a Council employee and shop steward for his branch of Unison, Andy ? committed Christian and Community Development Officer working on a rough ?social housing? estate in South London, Marjorie ? former chair of CND and PR Officer for CRE and others - all members of the Conservative Party.

We're open to all - we don't represent any particular slice of society and we're not stereotypes ? just politically aware and concerned.

er, if we are going to generalise, I think that's just the Middle Class whoever they vote for

I voted conservative but I am almost tempted to vote labour in the general election because I would like to see them FORCED (cause soon we just won't be able to borrow money anymore) to sort out the mess they have got us all into. Otherwise the conservatives will be left doing all the mopping up as usual and will be seen as baddies again.

And, to the extent that there remains a "working class" this is beginning o happen again. Equally - the benfitariat that has long been Labour's core support base is beginning to see New Labour for what they are.

The next election will be about who the voters feel can best manage the appalling financial hole this government has created. There is a real possibility (not I think, yet, a probability) that LAbour could come third to the Lib Dems.

    • The Commons Public Accounts Committee questioned both the CEO and MD of Capita yesterday, at their last meeting before the recess:  https://committees.parliament.uk/event/25889/formal-meeting-oral-evidence-session/.  In October they'd already expressed concern that Capita might not  be able to efficiently retake over responsibility for the administration within the timescale. Given the joint statement recently issued by Capita and the Cabinet Office I'm not sure that contacting an MP is going to add much, other than venting what I think most of us can probably appreciate of what those affected are likely  to be thinking and feeling; unless perhaps, and I hope it's not needed, to report on deficiencies in the immediate rescue actions.
