My kids are 4 and 2 now, so I don't quite have to carry the world around with me anymore, but I still always need a store of wipes, toy cars, spare knickers about me (along with the usual handbag guff of keys, wallet, phone, notebook etc). I am using the pram less and less nowadays(hoorah!), so I am looking for a nice backpack to treat myself too - one that doesn't scream mummy, but is also practical should the inevitable happen and it gets apple juice/wee/coffee on it!

I like the fjallraven, herschel and sandqvist brands, but anyone out there recommend one over the other? or something else?

Eastpak Wyoming Rucksack

Good straps, not too chunky. Looks better than usual rucksack.

Leather(?) bottom and decent comfy carrying handle.

Bought one in TK Max years ago. Used weekly, still going strong.

And at 25-40 quid more replaceable and chuckaroundable than Herschel etc

herschel basic backpack doesn't have enough pockets - no exterior quick access pocket. Def get something that not just one big compartment but also not something with loads of fiddly compartments.

Whistles ones were half price at Next. I had a look at blue metallic type one. Nice. Roomy. Good pockets. But wasn't convinced the straps would hold up to the amount of rubbish I shove in mine.

Depends what you want...canvas/leather? Lots of pockets vs more streamlined?

I treated myself to a Whistles one when I went back to work. Love it. Roomy enough and love the fact that it has a zip all the way around the top. Very high quality and no concern about hardiness, although it is a fashion bag rather than an expedition rucksack so not built to take quite as much!

If you want something similar then it's worth looking on the outnet to see if they have anything, or Grazia often do a 25% off at Whistles thing...

wow, some rucksack experts out there! thanks!

i looked at the whistles ones and yes they are beautiful but i don't think practical enough for my needs

eastpak wyoming - i'm afraid i don't like it, don't laugh but its too rucksack-y for me :)

the millican ones are nice, but might be a bit too high spec for me

not aware of outnet and just had a peek at this gorgeous chloe one http://www.theoutnet.com/en-GB/product/See-by-Chloe/Textured-leather-backpack/599573 but again i don't think its practical enough (thin straps for example)

i think i want a canvas type one, with 1 or no pockets on the outside and a couple of pockets/compartments inside....Annoyingly most of the sites don't actually show what they're like inside!

Ha- agreed- we need more posts like this!

I love Bagman and Robin Hiro bags- they make them in the back of the shop: http://www.bagmanandrobin.com/collections/backpack

But for roominess I ended up buying a Cath Kitson backpack which was v pretty.

Cheaper but still v roomy and often stylish ones are found at Accessorise.

I also outgrew the need for a 'Mum' bag so saved up and bought one of these with the lovely Watermeadow material. Leather, canvas etc. Been so well used and still looks lovely! Built to last. Still satchel though, not a rucksack.

    • There were three vans marked “External Cleaning Contractors” (or words to that effect) outside the Grove Tavern this morning, with blokes who seemed to be looking the place over. Anyone know if it’s going to be scrubbed up? Would this be an end of lease requirement, to hand it back without graffiti and fly posting?
    • the companies issue a phone click on qr code to give you guide price - however, they seem to work more on an algorithim of what works for them, so after a few books, they suddenly go 'no' until they get one they absolutely want - they buy for pence - so you need a lot of books, then they go through them and subjectively tell you the ones which are not up to scratch, but having bought also from the same company, they do not necessarily send out 'good' stock - you must pack them, they give the labels and then they collect.  I think there is room for a more honest competitor, but I am sure it is a difficult business, built on inventory and algorithims rather than buying 'books'.  Would be interested in hearing in more detail about the venture.
    • ecde, what do you mean by outdoor water?   An outside tap?  If so, where's it being fed from?  Presumably from somewhere within the building; maybe somewhere you don't have control of or access to?   Is it meant to be for drinking?
    • You have an opportunity to set up a scheme to buy people's books,do you mean? And you will pay someone a huge amount to be allowed to set up the scheme? I don't understand. Is your final sentence unfinished? I buy a lot of books secondhand. If there's a particular book I want I always google to see if I can get it secondhand first. Quite often the book I get looks virtually new and unread, but much cheaper than if I had bought it new, even at a reduced new price. There are loads of places online with a huge selection of secondhand books. At least one of the websites  sells them via a number of different secondhand booksellers who all apparently  gain potential customers via their search online for a particular book. But I also give away a lot of books, either to friends or to charity shops (especially the Oxfam book shop in Herne Hill).  It would be a huge hassle to send them somewhere like you are suggesting, especially if you have to put in the details first. I suppose at least these days you can easily google to find out if any of them are worth anything. When my dad died, on behalf of the family  I took a carload of his books to Hay on Wye (I lived not far from there at the time) plus some of my old childhood books. They cherrypicked the ones they wanted and wouldn't take most of them, and I strongly suspect I wasn't given anything like they were worth.
