This is my new road rage....Already today I have had 3 phone calls, one for windows, one for legal action (ambulance chasing) and one electronic - "you have been selected....".

I HATE it. Such a blinking invasion of my space. If I wanted new windows etc I would find a company.

End of rant.

This is so one of my bugbears. And I'm sure MrsMac thinks it's some "dodgy" phone call

I registerd at the website above which says allow 28 days for calls to stop but they by and large stopped within 10 days. I still get the odd one tho... It's like they find new ways to spam

I did read a very very long article in the paper once (hang on let me have a root around...ah)

About the other side of the coin and I never try and be rude but just.... WHY!!!!! There must be people who buy this stuff for it to be profitable - do these people have a vote??

I once had a call from some company who said I had won a family holiday abroad blah blah blah - went on for about 10 mins telling me the details. Then he asked if I had kids and I said 'no' and he said that I wasn't therefore eligible for the prize! Maybe he should have asked that question first! V. annoying.

We registered with some BT policy which means we don't get as many calls now thank god.

Glad its not just me getting old and grumpy and I agree that it is a puzzle as to who benefits/buys from these calls. I just cant imagine.

I literally screamed down the phone on Sunday at 9pm when I got a call. I cant imagine anyone welcoming that sort of intrusion.

Anyway, hopefully I will have to find something new to moan about shortly!

not fogetting the obligitatory "and how are you today?"

Have a freakin guess! I had a fractious day at the office (soothed only by access to this wonderful place), my evening out was cancelled, interest rates have gone up again and I've just got in the door after the 40 bus decided to "have a change" outside the bike shop in Camberwell, before getting snarled up bu other considerate drivers at the green junction - but that wasn't too bad because I had plenty to listen to from the selection of phones around me. I forgot to get milk on the way back and as I came I hear the phone ringing so I ran to it and got you. Do you want to hear about all of this in detail or do you just want to assure me this isn't a sales call

No, don't hang up, put the handset down on the table and walk away. They are paying for the call. Much more satisfying.

Register with the marketing people mentioned, and also go ex-directory. I on;y ever get US calls now (not covered by UK scheme), which are few and far between.

Okay - free bit of advice here:

Since 11th December 2003 (under the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 for the geeks out there), it is unlawful to make unsolicited direct marketing calls to individuals who have indicated that they do not want to receive such calls.

Before you hang up, tell them in no uncertain terms that you do not want them to contact you again by telephone or otherwise and ask them to remove your personal data from their databases. It is your legal right not to be marketed to in the UK by telephone in this unsolicited manner.

Also, as someone above has said, you should also register with this site http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/ (go to the telephone preference option). Traders are meant to check with this list before marketing to you by live phone calls (i.e. it blocks out everyone). If you do want to receive marketing calls from traders, they will still be able to call you but you must give your consent to the communication (hence all the "tick this box" stuff when you give traders your personal details).

If traders still contact you by telephone and the communication is not solicited, you should report them to the Information Commissioner www.ico.gov.uk.

Good luck.

    • Did you try the emergency number posted above? It mentions lift breakdowns over the festive period outside the advertised  times. Hope you got it sorted x
    • People working in shops should not be "attempting to do the bill in their head." Nor if questioned should they be  trying to "get to an agreeable number." They should be actually (not trying to) getting to the correct number. I'm afraid in many cases it is clearly more than incorrect arithmetic. One New Year's Eve in a restaurant (not in East Dulwich but quite near it) two of us were charged for thirty poppadoms. We were quite merry when the bill came, but not so merry as to not notice something amiss. Unfortunately we have had similar things happen in a well established East Dulwich restaurant we no longer use. There is also a shop in East Dulwich which is open late at night. It used not to display prices on its goods (that may have changed). On querying the bill, we several times found a mistake had been made. Once we were charged twice for the same goods. There is a limit to how many times you can accept a "mistake".  There is also a limit to how many times you can accept the "friendly" sweet talking after it.
    • Adapted not forced.  As have numerous species around the world.  Sort of thing that Attenborough features.  Domestic dogs another good example - hung around communities for food and then we become the leader of the pack.  Not sure how long it will take foxes to domesticate, but some will be well on their way.    Raccoons also on the way https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1j8j48e5z2o
    • My memory, admittedly not very reliable these days, places the shop on the block on the left hand side just before Burgess Park going towards Camberwell. Have also found a reference to Franklins Antiques being located at 157 Camberwell Road which is on that block. This is a screen shot obtained from Google maps of that address which accords with my memory except the entrance door was on the right hand side, where the grey door is, rather than in the centre.
