I'm open to many things though.

Just not ju-ju men in the sky.

Hardly closed minded to look at what's in front of you and say "that stuff's in front of me" !

Anyways, what you two smokin ? (and where can I get some..)

Also are you a clique ? (or a cult...)

Haven't physicists recently proved that our existence is not really 'real'?

I agree with Jeremy re Dawkins. Went to one of his lectures many moons ago & found him unbelievably arrogant. (Edit: Dawkins not Jeremy...whom I've also met and us definitely not arrogant) :)

Richard Dawkins must increasingly be feeling like he is banging his head against a brick wall given the upsurge in religious fervour all over the place. That teacher that was stabbed (in a science class?) was attributing his narrow escape to Jesus and god....bugger the medics that actually fixed him up!
It stands to reason (literally) that religion is on the decline since we are educated and have thousands of years of philosophy and many more of us have learned to think for ourselves....unfortunately the god-botherers are STILL hijacking many areas of our lives. I do thoroughly object to my taxes funding the desemination of so much deceit and lies-not to mention the discrimination against LGBT people- YES, god-botherers they are human beings!

There are plenty of mainstream Christians who don't have those views of LGBT, and denominations which have lesbian/gay pastors.

Let's also not forget that, for better or worse, the institution that fostered that development of philosophy (and art, and science) was the Church for long stretches of history.

I guess my problem with those blanket statements about the Church and the aggressive approach ofsomeone like Dawkins is that there's no nuance, it's predictable. I agree in principle, but I think he's arguing against the past and there's probably a better conversation to be had.

But I'd hate for what he says to be banned somehow

under modern blasphemy laws.

I meant to say 'dissemination ....' how it came out as 'desemination...' probably unconscious reference to other 'faith' goings-on.

R. Dawkins is not arguing against the past because the religious beliefs of the past are alive and well today. Faith schools are still operating using dogma from the past, much of it fundamentalist, and it is just as bad as it was 30 years ago- if not worse.

All faiths are self-serving. The leaders are just the same as politicians...instead of crosses on ballot papers, read 'bums on pews' or whatever.

It's all just a way of keeping the poor and needy satisfied with the promise of this 'heaven' ffs

I am not religious. I think religion is a man-made invention, just to try and explain the universe in an age when they couldn't and keep others in check. Any good I do is altruistic and not for some reward from a beardy sky fairy !! OMG ;-)

I can believe there was a Jesus, illegitimate son of an engaged couple and it's a good story, Try that one today down at social services !!!!

And the other religions are not much better, creating a universe from a lotus flower in a belly button? The bible and Quoran actually have a lot in common.

I can't explain or prove where the universe came from: big bang, continually evolving multiverse or whatever, but I don't believe it was "designed" by deities either. Thanks.

Isn't that a quote from Cheech and Chong?

    • Thank you for the feedback! Helps to see we're not alone. The only good experience we had was Modern House. Anyone tried Strike/Purple Bricks/Yopa? How did it go? Anything to be mindful of?
    • Best experience we had was with Modern House. The rest of the agents around the area are appalling.... They just want their commission and not interested in getting a good deal. You'd be lucky if they pick up the phone...
    • I’d like to echo the positive comments about Trelco. I discovered that the stopcock on the rising main was leaking and was damaging the flooring in the utility room. Not having seen this thread, or any reviews for that matter,  I picked Trelco  as it was the nearest to me. It was a gamble but goodness it paid off. James was responsive and clear in what he offered. His colleague Andy replaced the offending stopcock and put in a lever valve to allow me to shut off the water easily when I go away. He did a great job, neat and tidy, he was cheerful, friendly and professional. All this within a day of contacting them. Although not an emergency it needed resolution quickly. The price charged was very reasonable indeed, especially considering the quality of the service. I am so pleased to have found such an excellent plumber.
