I used to go clubbing 3-5 times a week from 18-22. Then at laest once a week until I was 30.

When I was 18 Weekdays were various Soul nights in the crap clubs - for dancing. Friday specialist soul clubs - for dancing/being seen. Saturday was 'pulling' (normally failing) in the average shite clubs with my non-soulboy mates (straights clubs as we used to call them in a more innocent time); when I got a bit older it was more in the centre of town and trying to be in the cool clubs though I always loverd Wend May's locomotion too but gradually was getting really bored of the club scene when HALLELLUH Acieeeed but when that got booted out of the clubs in '88 and went outdoors it was much more fun; then I started just going local and mainly the mambo/Fridge - never liked the Ministry et al that much The End was ok, blue note was ok. Ibiza Clubs were OK when I finally went out but I felt I'd done it all before..with better dancing... and even then they were way past sell by date.

My clubbing days were spent between 1973 and 1988, and some of my favourites were

Crackers - Wardour Street

Global Village - Villiers Street arches

Lyceum - Strand (Monday night)

Cheeky Pete's - Richmond

Sloop John D - A boat moored off Chelsea Bridge

Goldmine - Canvey Island

Sundowner _ Tottenham Court Road

Birds Nest - Kings Road

Sombreros - Kennsington

Room at the top - Ilford

Cats Whiskers - Streatham

Hatchetts - Piccadilly

The boat was very quirky and could only be accessed via a ferry from a pier opposite Cheyne Walk. It wasn't a club that was widely known about which usually meant no more than 40 0r 50 got in the place but the American DJ played some wonderful tunes, stuff that he had imported from the US which he was happy to chat to us about.

To tilt the compass northwards, my fave places in Manchester/Leeds from '84--'95 were

No 1 Club (first place to play house in the UK, someone said, but I am not so sure, but the gilt and chrome and ?1 cans of icey Breakers lager were great);

Hacienda (it was regularly empty during the week and even at weekends it was often quiet, except for certain band nights and, of course, post '88. Nude Night was not as kinky as it sounds - it was funk on a Friday night);

Stuffed Olives (subterranean, glamorous, camp, northern but which took on a newer life once Acid House arrived);

Cyprus Tavern (rowdy-ish, student-y - when there were hardly any students, compared to now);

Rockshots;

Corbieres (cellar wine bar with good Goth/indie/New Romo/townie mix and a good jukebox);

Archway;

New York, New York (Rovers' Return meets Joe Orton's parlour via Walk On The Wildside);

Paradise Factory (all was getting a bit too ravy-Davy-gravy for me by then);

Le Phonographique (shopping centre-based, downstairs broom cupboard with a novel approach to fire safety and emergency exitry but good al the same);

Warehouse;

London wise, Nag Nag Nag was a great night as was Sex in Leicester Square way back and Kinky Gerlinky too.

Many a bottle was downed here.

Did you ever drink in Gander's, basement jazz bar in Barton Arcade?...

If Barton Arcade was the upscale tube of shops/odd cafe between St A's Square and the Arndale, then yes, I think I did! (I could search for it and find my own answer, but in the spirit of the '80s, I shan't.)

I also used to like the Armenian Cafe for post-club nosh and that bar diagonally opposite Napoleon's whose name escapes me (and my Google aversion).

Why oh dear? Global Village was the best for funk dance floor fillers, loved the place, and Monday night was motown night in 73,and 74.

    • One of the best of Shakespeare 's plays.  I did Othello for A level. Also seen a number of stage and film versions. Is there any specific aspects of the play that is difficult for your daughter to understand?
    • @Sue think this is your quote.  It wasn't binary, good Vs bad, and Corbyn had a lot of popular support, as evidenced by the previous election. He had aot of good policies, some picked up by others since. He was defeated by a mixture of a right wing press,good targeting the Johnson 'Get Brexit Done" and for some that Johnson was a funny loveable rogue/fool/liar/philander/opportunist.  I wouldn't see choosing the perceived least worst candidate out of the two major parties as being "good sense'.  We imagine that Corbyn would have been terrible, but we don't know.  He would have taken a stronger line against Israel in Gaza, not sucked up to Trump nut on Russia?  Would the UK be better for that?
    • We have had 4 greyhounds - the last one, a bitch, was not speyed so we  had to pay for that at our local vet.  Only one dog was nervous around children and only one was cat friendly.
    • Apologies on the tardy reply, but thank you everyone for your responses and suggestions! Unfortunately I couldn't attend the recent EDF drinks because of work (I know right). But will absolutely keep eyes peeled for the next one and try and come down!
