alternative swimming pools

[East Dulwician]

now that ED pool is being refurbished I was wondering if anyone could tell me of a decent nearby pool I might be able to go to that doesn't involve being a member. I know the one in Camberwell but its not particularly nice. Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

Is the ED pool out of action for over a year?

Brockwell Lido is nice. It is outdoors though so can be a little bit bracing but it's good for the soul and never did our Victorian forefathers any harm.

Camberwell pool is not that bad - I'd say no worse than east dulwich. I go at lunchtimes and it's usually fairly quiet. Having said that, they are planning to close the pool for refurbishment in the autumn

If you mean the swimming pool, shut since 2006 pending redevelopment...

The latest development I'm aware of is:

"On 15th July 2009 the Mayor and Cabinet of the London Borough of Lewisham decided to pursue a new option for Forest Hill Pools known as Option 3. This became possible because the Council was able to source ?3 million from elsewhere in its budget. They are now publicly committed to building new pools on the Dartmouth Road site, starting straightaway. They are also publicly committed to retaining the frontage block of the old pools building as part of the new building."

I'll second peckham pulse, in my opinion nicer than the east dulwich one, but that was because it looked old, I presume the refurb will spruce it up.

That sounds good... would be great if there was a learner pool there, now it's virtually impossible to get in to the one at p Pulse

They spending 5.5 million on East Dulwich and keeping the samesized pokey little pool, and for 3 million Forest Hill get a brand new pool?

Where is the 2.5 million or more going?

Oh, the total cost isn't ?3m, it's just there was a funding gap of ?2.9m between what the Council had put aside for the pool and what was needed - the extract I posted isn't clear, sorry. Will try and find the full details.

Though to be fair, the Forest Hill Pool was/is structurally unsound and requires substantially more work than ED. The whole structure other than the facade is probably going to need to be either rebuilt or reinforced. And I know it's not strictly ED, so apologies Admin, but this decision is in huge part due to a very sustained and organised campaign by local residents to force Lewisham to rethink their original plans to close the pool for good, including but not limited to those who participated in the Forest Hill Pools Stakeholder Group and the Keep Swimming in Forest Hill Campaign.

Yes, Original budget was "The 2009/10 ? 2011/12 Capital Programme budget report agreed by

Mayor & Cabinet in February 2009 provides ?9.406m for the Forest Hill

Pools project. Further to this a revenue reserve of ?179k was made

available in 2008/09 towards the costs to date of this project. Therefore

the total budget available is ?9.585m."

Two pools are mentioned, so hopefully will include a baby pool. But not until 2012.

What about the Bridge in Kangley Bridge Road near Sainsbury save a centre or there is one at Grove Park just up the road

from this one very nice inside.

We've been going to the Bridge lately, one main pool, which I've not been in, and a toddler/baby pool. Car park. Nice little round trip with a poss stop at the cafe at Savacentre.
