Recommendation for Handy Heroes Construction

Hello all,

we've just had our kitchen entirely refurbished, from top to bottom (including some hefty structural work) by Handy Heroes Construction, and they've done a sterling job. They get a lot of business from forums such as this one, so it's important to leave useful feedback for people who are thinking of getting some builders in: we can recommend them without a hesitation.

The whole process was straightforward and the team - from the first visit by owner / manager Rich through to the foreman Guy and the rest of the team was exceptionally competent, friendly and considerate. Many thanks to the both of them, and also to Matt the electrician and Pete the plumber.

The job we were quoted for was delivered to our complete satisfaction, and we paid exactly the price quoted for. Some extras were agreed and quoted for as the job progressed, very transparently.

When on site, the team, led by the immensely capable Guy, was extremely hard working and they did their utmost to minimise disruption whilst at the same time exhibiting ruthless attention to detail.

Even though we chose an Ikea kitchen (which by now I've realised makes life quite difficult for builders and installers due to the lack of space for utilities at the back of the units), the team worked out very clever solutions to accommodate some thorny issues for both plumbing and electrical installations. Structural improvement work was carried out very professionally and thoroughly. Installation, carpentry / cabinet making and finish were all spotless. All the other trades were available at very short notice, and we always had the feeling that our job was getting the attention it deserved.

As I said above, I would recommend using them for home improvement projects - the Handy Heroes team gave us complete peace of mind. I would not hesitate calling back on them for future work!

Please feel free to PM me for details if you're thinking of contracting them.

Guys I have to say I have had the opposite experience from Handy Heroes. They've done a few jobs for us - building cupboard doors, painting and hanging internal doors etc. Each time there has been some error on their side, usually when they say something will be done verbally and then it doesn't make it into the spec. Our latest issue (altercation?) has been because they said they would fix our sticking doors for free and then came round so late in the year that the weather meant the doors were ok. They also said they would fix the cupboard doors and are now claiming they only said that because they felt under pressure because I was frustated about the other work. It's sadly untrue and now we have wonky internal doors and cupboard doors that we will have to have someone else into fix.

I have to say I would not only not use them but I would not recommend them (and am warning people from my experience)

    • Thanks very much for that.   I think the better informed we are, the better our discussions will be. The article contained: "That arrest had quite an impact on the [phone theft] numbers for the following month,” said Green.  Here's another indicator, admittedly a piece of police PR,  of how well-targeted police efforts, mostly invisible to us,  can when successful  seriously affect offending figures: https://news.met.police.uk/news/met-police-drive-down-theft-and-robbery-by-84-percent-in-battersea-and-nine-elms-500495.
    • Another excellent article from Jim Waterson's London Centric reporting https://www.londoncentric.media/p/kitchen-foil-and-algerian-markets?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email Interesting that there seem to be favoured and repeated routes for phone snatching for particular thieves.  Seems ED might be one of them ☹️
    • Anywhere near the Overground/Windrush due to its excellent transport links.  You will get larger place in SE23 for example that will give you enough spare cash for private school if that's what you really want but states schools generally good, reflecting the demographic  Easy to get to the bustling streets of East Dulwich but in ten years see what happens to Forest Hill centre.  The whole of the area is full of green spaces. Access to East Croydon for days out in the South Coast
