We aren't sure what we can do yet. All we know is we can't afford to move and we are sick of sneaking around our tiny house for fear of waking our light sleeper. Some soundproofing sites say carpet would stop us hearing him, but not him hearing us (bizarre I know). I'm thinking something under the floor or underlay. It's literally just to allow us to move around our house freely without waking him up all the time. He wakes if our bed in the room next door creaks! And he even has white noise playing in his room.

ah right

between floors, we used acoustic rockwool. also a fire retardent which is good.

we did the walls adjacent to the neignbours, you could potentially insulate your internal walls with rockwool or add soundproofing layers (we used rubber and acoustic plasterboard)

both involve a fair amount of disruption as you need tp replaster / pull up the floors.

the insulation isnt cheap but if you are handy you can do a lot of it yourself.

might be worth trying to screw down the floorboards first though if its creaky floorboards.

good luck!

How old is he? Both of mine woke when a floorboard creaked up until about 2.5 years but improved dramatically after that to the extent that I can now put clothes away in my eldest (4.5) bedroom when he's asleep. Just wondering if he might grow out of it fairly soon rather than you spending money on soundproofing?
I know it doesn't help with the immediate problem but I'd consider giving it 6 months and then seeing how it is. My 2.5 year old still will wake sometimes when there is noise but generally settles back on her own now (ie it doesn't fully wake her) - I wouldn't chance going in there unless I had to though. As noted above, my 4.5 year old sleeps through anything now which is amazing considering he barely slept at all for the first 16 months of his life and then would wake at anything for a little while longer. Controversially I'd also consider getting rid of constant white noise as wonder whether its the things that don't fall into that ongoing pattern that are the issue? May all be worth a go if you can find a week where you can face it?

I had a flat where my neighbour below and myself could hear EVERYTHING. Mortifying. I install sound insulating rock wool under the floor boards.

It involve taking up every 4th floorboard, cutting the stuff to size and sliding it snuggly into place.

That was really good but I then also installed sound insulating carpet underlay and then tick carpet. Huge improvement all combined. And as Convex says it does improvement fire resistance.

It cost from memory about ?500 for the wool stuff but that did a 60m2 flat - I did every room. Took several weekends. But one room should be a single Saturday.

Think this is the stuff I used:

Prices seem a bit lower than when I used this stuff:

?33.59 for 5.76m2 of the stuff. I found a bread knife was good at cutting the stuff up.

Do where a mask and do really vacuum the roof afterwards.

    • No party is willing to tackle the "elephant in the room" which is the national debt. It is costing the country circa £100 Billion ANNUALLY to service that debt. That is more than the defence and education budgets. That debt burden has to be reduced which in reality means cost cuts. That means cutting back state pensions, index-linked pensions for civil servants and others such as police, NHS etc. It means cutting back on universal credit and cutting the number of people who are claiming benefits.
