The Chair Wrote:

Time to move this to the Lounge - which means I may ask, what became of Constantinople, butt of schoolboy jokes?

Sadly it is no longer a Turkish Delight, Chair.

The city of Constantinople "Fell" in 1453...:-$

Which beggars two seperate questions.

Firstly: When DID you go to School Chair?

Obviously it was sometime before 1453, that I do know.:-$

Secondly: What became of Turkish Del...no, don't worry about the second part...;-)

At least now we know that you are nearly as old as Methalusah, then that would explain your infinite sage advice and wisdom...

Therefore, people from Pakistan or Bangladesh might not like being called "Indian" either.

Quite. However, I met with a guy the other day, who was born in what is now Pakistan, but what was then India (I think he was born in 1946, a year before Pakistan existed, if I remember correctly), but he still wanted to be called Indian.

Just one persona obviously, but I found it interesting.

Ermmmm?. Are none of you aware of one of the most significant post colonial events to have happened last century, the formation of the state of Pakistan?

Areas which became Pakistan in 1957 (?) used to be part of British India. The people from these areas were therefore all colloquially known as Indian but folks slowly started to realise that referring to them as such was in fact incorrect. So the collective became Asian.

Funnily enough the colloquialism ?Asian? is still incorrect. As in Britain it refers to people from the Indian sub-continent, Sri Lanka etc. and sometimes even Asia Minor. However Oriental people, the Mongolians and the many peoples of Serbia are also technically Asian.

Simples no?

What makes you think they're not aware of it?

Pakistan was formed as an independent state in 1947, by the way. But you knew this, what with it being one of the most significant etc etc...

I think we also know that Asia doesn't just include the Indian sub-continent. It's just that the word "Asian" has that connotation in the UK.

In other parts of the world, the term "Asian" implies eastern Asia - which is equally inaccurate.

Also in America, describing someone as "Oriental" is seen as pretty offensive... not sure why...

Well I?m sure people are aware of it somewhere in the back of their consciousness? but not sure why it isn?t just the obvious reason why people in Britain would start to make the change from the using the term Indian to using the term Asian.

Can?t blame me for getting frustrated when peoples? view points are so frustratingly insular that they genuinely don?t even know the distinction between Britain and the UK.

I suspect most people thought it was so obvious it didn't need pointing out (Sorry SteveT). Also, it was pointed out, as was the Britain/UK distinction.

But if it suits you that we are all self-absorbed arseholes with the memory of a gnat, then so be it. It's getting a little wearing, though.

I wouldn?t take it personally Ted. I am a victim of socially enforced misanthropy, it stems from feelings of social alienation during childhood caused either by feeling distinct from the herd and/or everyone being a cunt.

One of the consequences is, "high sounding language unsupported by dignity of thought" which according to the BBC is the rather poetic way Samuel Johnson described the term Rant in his Dictionary.

So as you can see I actually suffer from a misunderstood condition which is unfairly persecuted due to public misunderstanding.

What a terrible thing to live with. And the worst is, you can tell nobody as nobody will understand.

I think the only course left open to you is to construct a vast underground lair, staff it with easily expendable henchmen and willing female assassins, and then let events take their course. That will show them.

    • That's really helpful. Do the Community Councils still exist? It sounds to me that whoever the contact is on the council who has sorted out the North Cross Road notice board and put the new list of councillors in it must at least have access to the key for that one? Unless it was one of the unlocked ones. And of course if somebody knows where the keys are, they may have no idea that people are looking for them or that this forum thread exists. Which are the notice boards which are not locked?  The very helpful locksmith near the station (?Callows?)  might be able to provide keys for them, or if not, new locks, in return for some local publicity? In fact, they may be able to advise in general, rather than keep trying unresponsive people at the council. But then of course there is still the question of who is going to take responsibility for putting appropriate East Dulwich community information into them and updating it as necessary.
    • Our residents' association used to have keys many moons ago, but when locks were changed, we tried everyone (including ward councillors) to get keys to no avail. A couple of boards are not locked. The Community Councils originally paid for all the notice boards in Dulwich. May have come under the Cleaner Greener budget.
    • Blame Margaret Thatcher - she started the privatization of public utilities.
    • Aria is great, fixed the leak under sink and a wonky toilet set. He’s very conscientious and thorough in his work and an honest, friendly guy. Really pleased to recommend him
