Bombay/ Mumbai is a bit of a minefield.

Essentially it was officially changed to meet the political agenda of the far right Shiv Sena party which won the State elections in the mid-late nineties. The official name change wasn't just about booting out the colonial past, but also overtly asserting Marathi, and Hindu, dominance over the region (Maharashtra).

But bear in mind that both pronunciations had co-existed for a long time, depending on what language you spoke, so it was not so much a change of name, as giving dominance to one over the other.

Muley, that's another case of the decline of Britain. Our old Wade-Giles romanicised spelling of Chinese has long lost favour as PRC's own pinyin has taken over.

Taiwan adopted it sometime in the eighties I think and many of the old WG's words have slowly ebbed away.

British based news media eventually just stopped pissing in the wind and adopted what by the 90s was an internationally accepted standard.

Although place names may be a lost cause for the old WG ways, most historical people such as Mao Tse Tung(as opposed to the pinyin maozedong) still retain favour in the west.

Since when did cider become lucozade is the more pressing matter surely?

When did Heile Selassie change his name to God?

Now I rated Mr. Selassie heile, but "God"?? thats strongin' it a bit, ain't it?

Must be Jah talking...that reminds me, I haven't played my "Best Of The Bee Gees" lately, which is my favourite Bee Gees Album ( sorry, AP)...

    • It didn't occur to me to ask. No idea if dieticians are employed within the NHS. It is just one line of enquiry among others. The GP mentioned it, not me.
    • I thought the most they sell in terms of hot food at londis is like pastries and sausage rolls and for hot drinks its like costa coffee but its always a convenience store. Doesn’t look too bad in my opinion considering that shop has been closed down ever since i moved here
    • Hi Busterb, Yesterday I turned up with a scanner & towels, hoping to take a deceased tabby down to TNV. The body was moved moments before arrival & had not been turned in to any vets, rescues or animal hospitals. I am wondering if this could have been the same cat & if someone just tried to move the tabby further away from the road. Please be warned, viewers discretion is advised. but this is what the deceased tabby looked like: https://www.facebook.com/groups/900015513463302/permalink/3729980853800073/  In any case, if you haven't been able to get someone to scan or take down to a vet, I can scan tomorrow morning.
    • Wholeheartedly recommend Aria. He was polite, responsive and sorted our leak, from an old tap on an old plumbing system, with no bother and on same day.
