Jeremy
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8245276.stmBrixton are launching their own currency - presumably to try and boost the local economy, by ensuring that money spent in Brixton stays in Brixton. Is this a good idea? Will it catch on? I have my doubts... Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/8032-the-brixton-pound/ Share on other sites
HonaloochieB
Will the dealers at the top of Coldharbour Lane and opposite the town hall accept them? Jeremy
It doesn't seem likely, does it? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/8032-the-brixton-pound/#findComment-248757 Share on other sites
bigbadwolf
I can't see a currency printed by the bank of toyland giving anyone, in any borough, a leg up in the recession. This is just a chance to get in the papers, which for Brixton or Lambeth as a whole, isn't that much of a milestone. Brendan
I kinda hpoe this actually works especially as I spend at least one day each weekend in Brixton. I like the idea of having a separate currency to use on the weekends even if it is just a novelty. chez
I want to buy one as a souvenir! If lots of people do that it'll keep money in the local economy... SeanMacGabhann
The whole project is doomed. It's slightly interesting but very few of the traders I have seen interviwed are on boardBut dear GOD, the sheer predictability of TLS not contributing to the topic at hand but just warning about Brixton generally is crushing Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/8032-the-brixton-pound/#findComment-249645 Share on other sites
LegalEagle-ish
There are quite a lot of local curency and time bank schemes around which are a good way of trying to get economic growth outside of the top heavy licenced money printing scams of National currencies. They all have problems such as forgery and unenforceabilty issues but can be quite succesful. I forget what the biggest one is called, but it does help generate local businesses. SteveT
I have yet to discover one which is a big success as Jeremy says it seems unlikely, and wolfies bank of toyland comment made me smile.Sorry but I'm out.
