There is something is what Mockney saying but I wouldn?t be too cynical about it all, maybe just a little cautious. While many new-age-yoga-ninja places are just offering a genuine retreat from the stresses of the world mixed in with some good exercise, healthy eating and time for reflection there are some that are looking to get people to follow their way of doing things. These places prey on the needy and are often run by weirdos with huge egos.

We already have a perfectly good institution for spiritually and emotionally needy people. It?s called church.

Thank you to everyone who has thrown their twopenneth in. I've read all your comments with interest. In truth I think I need to give it some more serious thought.

Emotionally I'm not a needy person and I'm not looking for any answers to life's big questions; I really do just want the physical challenge. I had toyed with the idea of volunteering earlier in the year but I ruled it out because I couldn't think of anything I could do - but maybe I'll look into it properly. Thanks to Hal and PRose for posting.

I shall probably return to Snow and Rock's hiking department because the assistants there were really realy easy on the eye and just the thought of one of them kneeling at my feet and asking if I could wiggle my toes OK is just too divine. I deserve a little pampering.

I hope you didn't think I was insinuating anything of the sort. I was just commenting on Mockneys experience with gurus.

Have you considered just doing yoga? Or stepping it up a level if you already do it?

Oh goodness no Brendan - no insinuation felt at all. I was just saying that I'm not looking for anything "spiritual" out of this - just purely physical. Mockney's post was quite alarming though - I think it must have been a very bad experience for him to feel so strongly. It's my body I want to send to boot camp - nothing else - that's what I was saying.

Yoga, hmmm - I try so very hard but I have all the flexibility of an ironing board. I do keep trying and I do enjoy it - but I'm not likely to win any prizes at it any time soon.

I have a lot of stamina though - I can keep on going when others are flagging.

Well, Steve, I think you'll find that this is a gap in the market and thank God perhaps something can be done now that they're on my shopping list. I'm sending a note to Vivienne (Westwood).

    • We went to Kokum yesterday for lunch and it was fantastic. On a really hot and sunny day, the outside tables were in the shade, with a breeze which helped! It was £15 each for BBQ and beer. Great BBQ smell & a free taster dish.  The main menu options we chose came to less than £30. the service was lovely.    we happened to be walking by, so thought worth mentioning here.    (no connections to the business!)
    • If Starmer takes the party any further right then can he complain if the left leave? If Reform win it will be entirely Starmer and the right wing of the labour party's fault, there will be no one else to blame. After 14 years of the tories making this country worse, there doesn't seem much appetite for a continuation of centre right politics.
    • I knew nothing about Kronstadt.  Thanks for taking me down a Google wormhole, Dkh.
    • SUP will likely be in the next Olympics and I wondered about me representing team GB doing that? I have a SUP, a good quality carry bag for it, a high-tensile lightweight carbon fibre paddle, and a good quality wetsuit. What are my chances? I’m planning to take it out soon on the Thames Estuary near Erith to try it out.
