I'm in two minds about this one. The Ivanhoe is a just short trot from the centre of ED (goose green/LL), while it's quite a bit further from the centre of camberwell (camberwell green). Therefore it makes more sense for them to tap into the ED market than the cambwerwell market.

Alan's right though, it is actually Camberwell. Some would argue that labelling themselves as "East Dulwich" is a cynical marketing ploy... trying to benefit from the so-called gentrification of Lordship Lane, while denying the roots/origins of the establishment.

- 'Cynical marketing ploy' that?s a little harsh.... but correct. However, I will say that the Canning is less than a couple of 100 metres from the ED border and don?t you agree that any competition is healthy competition? When I talk about the canning I am proud to say that it is in Camberwell but I would be a fool to limit or label my pub in only one area when I can quite easily use two or three. I would also guess that a very high percentage of our cliental are from ED.

Welcome to the George Canning Bar & Restaurant on the borders of Camberwell & East Dulwich??

re sun & doves - I'd cite an unseasonable season rather than ED competition, I was out and about in ED last night and it was very quiet for a thursday.

Re borders - regardless of old boroughs demarcations it makes more sense for Hoopers to be either ED or peckham in terms of psychogeography, than camberwell.

For me camberwell is a sort of victorian echo of better times, it's more picturesque in a piss-stained junkie, plastic bag ridden fear kind of way than east dulwich, but I'm pretty glad I have a hill between me and it and breathe a sigh of relief every time no-one stabs me in the bus queue by the green every day.

Yay the silver buckle, traditional boozer huh.

I haven't been to the Canning but I'm already guessing it's the kind of place I wouldn't mind having two minutes walk from my house. ie 'a local'. Unfortunately I'm also guessing it's the kind of pub that there isn't a place for in ED these days.

My friend who lives at the top of Dog Kennel Hill (*holds nose*) goes there for the quiz night.

Isn't it just London? (ok im from the North)each area has its good and bad, some more bad than others. Ive lived in London for nearly 20 years, North london, west and even east London and this is the first time that i can actually say that this is now my home and it feels like home. The Canning is in SE5 but i do live in ED. Camberwell Grove, Grove Lane, Grove Park, etc all look and feel like ED. Yes its Camberwell but the folk are very similar... Home sweet home

I live on champion hill, i really don't give a sh!t whether it's dulwich, peckham or camberwell frankly Alan. Doesn't bother me one iota.

All i know is I have a host of nice places to eat nearby in most directions, lots of nice pubs, it's quite green, Camberwell is photogenic, but frankly large parts of it are really quite unpleasant.

To betray something I'd have to have some loyalty in the first place; sorry bud, but I don't.

You seem to have a bee in your bonnet about it and I can't quite work out why, but if you like i'll get Vance and Owen down and we can sort something out, draw up some new silly maps, or I could hang about at the top of the hill with a dragonov gunning down old ladies, territorialism usually seems to end up down that path.

I've some fascinating photos of Sarajevo if you want to see them. Those Novi Grad types didn't like those Zelecnica types much either.

    • Because of the weather which delayed completion with roofer only being able to work certain days, it was up from November - end of January. Went slightly higher than gutters (we also had guttering replaced).
    • It's tough being a courier and the pay which is largely based on the number they deliver is miserable. Hence the staff turnover is high. EFRI was previously branded as HERMES but they had to create a new brand name because of poor performance. We get regular courier deliveries and EVRI are by far the worst. They just drop the parcel at the front door - often without ringing the bell. But worst is when they deliver to the equivalent door number on LL instead of ours on EDG. Best are ParcelForce, DHL and DPD by a wide margin.
    • I know the couple you mean, and she has always been friendly and smiley when delivering to me, but obviously in a hurry, for all the reasons outlined in the thread. My gate is always open, however (unless someone coming to the house closes it when they leave). I can't see the point of gates that have to be opened and shut again every time someone comes to the house. It just seems a waste of time, and it's annoying if you are carrying stuff. And a closed gate  conveys a sort of "my house is my fortress" feel. To me, anyway.
    • Thanks for posting this. Really interesting. It would be good if you added a star rating, so that it was easier to do comparisons / see what your top recommendations are. Great blog though!
