I asked one of the police officers at the time if it was normal for a thief to retaliate in such a way and he told me that it was very unusual. He said that generally the culprit holds their hands up in a sort 'fair cop' type of fashion.

Security guards do not actually have any more legal powers than any member of the general public, they have just been employed by a business to help them to protect themselves from theft.? Security Guards, like any member of the public, can make a citizens arrest under certain conditions. Basically, you are entitled to detain a person that you suspect of shoplifting, as long as you have reasonable grounds for this suspicion. In order to detain them, you are also entitled to use a ?reasonable? amount of force. The extent to which you are entitled to use force really depends on the situation, but it should only be used where absolutely necessary. Your entitlement to use force to detain a shoplifting suspect is based on the fact that you believe they have committed a criminal offence, so you need to have proof of this to show that you were entitled to use whatever force you exerted.

K.K, luckily there were cctv cameras in the car park and I?m sure that they will be viewed and used to convict a man of theft and assault. That same video footage will also show how much of a hero Sam the security guard really was and perhaps, if it?s of any interest, how the maniac was eventually wrestled to the floor and how he was held there until the police arrived.

Good question - and in my own defense, I was sitting in Starbucks using my laptop ? the fight started at the far right hand corner of the carpark. I sort of noticed it then sat back down. You kinda think that once the man had been stopped, all of the guards, managers etc would quickly get involved. It was probably a minute or so later that I looked up to see that it was still going on. I left my laptop on the table and walked over to help the guard. I witnessed some of the punch and kicks as I approached the man. When I got there (2 or 3 minutes after the man had left with the tv's) the guard had just fallen to the ground. I could have got involved earlier I suppose but I didn't realise it was so serious. I didn't want to 'rubberneck' if you get my meaning. You think its been dealt with so you don't get involved. Not an excuse Kapt. Kopter, just a fact. If I had of realised I would have got there sooner.

I was sitting in Starbucks when I witnessed a man walking out of the middle doors of Sainburys- alarms flashing, sirens going etc ? with a boxed tv in either hand. (Digital tv's have handles so they are easy to carry) He continued out into the carpark and was met by a security guard. The thief, in his late 20's, was as rough as an oinkers backside and equally as ugly. He was tattooed up, well built and was certainly someone you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley. As you can imagine, the thief did not want to be stopped by the guard and so ensued what can only be described as a ruckus of the highest order. The security guard wasn't the tallest and he was a little over weight yet he got hold of the thief by the scruff of the neck and refused to let go. The thief started headbutting, punching and kicking the guard and to be honest it was sickening to watch. The two went toe to toe for about 3 minutes until eventually the security guard finally went down ? even then he was still trying to grab hold of the thief. The thief started kicking the guard in the head while he was on the ground. The guard was out cold but the idiot, who was covered in blood still kicked him once more in the head. At this point a couple of us jumped on the guy and wrestled him to the ground, holding him there until the police arrived. Sam the security guard confronted the maniac on his own ? fought him, giving as good as he got until the degenerate thief finally overpowered him. It was an act of bravery that most people will never witness in their entire lifetime. Sam the Sainburys security guard, I take my hat off to you sir. You are a hero.

The Freehold is owned by The Wellington Pubco. The current tenants have a worthless free of tie lease. To be honest, the current operators are entirely out of their depth. Perhaps they should consider another career. Unless Wellington are selling the lease, which I doubt, I can?t see JDW being interested at all. More rumour for the rumourmongers I?m afraid.

Hoopers bar sells the best scampi fries I've ever tasted ? can?t remember who makes then though. I think they must be using real scampi not just cheap imitation stuff that you find in other bars. Just the right amount of crunch and just the right amount of softness ? fabulous. Right I?m off scampi fishing ? does anyone know where?s a good place to go?

On Mary Byrne (just to wind up ST&NLY): Mary has the potential to not only win XFactor but to go on and be a recording artist in her right. She is immensely talented but her downfall in this competition may be the songs she chooses to sing. By her own admission she has ?strong deep voice? so she needs to be precise in her song choice and not end up ?shouting? the words because it may have the opposite effect. She has the talent but will she listen and take on board advice from people who have been there and done it? Time will tell. The jury is out as yet but it was still a wonderful addition. Well done Mary Byrne.

ST&NLY ? such resentment for a program that is after all, just Saturday night light entertainment. Many millions of people love it, yet I accept, there are probably just as many who don?t. I watch very little TV ? mainly sport or news ? yet I watch XF. Its fun, it?s a laugh and its pure escapism. I watched it last night and clicked on youtube this morning to see if Mary Byrne was as good as thought she was. She was. Sad? Probably ? but I enjoyed my cheap bottle of Sainsbury?s plonk a tad more sat in front of the tv last night. And guess what? I?m looking forward to next week. Bliss?.

I realise that this is a strange request but I?m looking for help with a logical problem that I believe needs to be solved mathematically in order to make any sense of it. I think I need help from someone who has an advanced understanding of algebra and could apply it to a simple logical problem ? although it isn?t if you know what I mean? Ok ? Snorky, I think I want to agree with you but I'm still not sure what I'm agreeing to. You cant stop what id happening on the Lane and the shops that sell 'tat' will survive only is the public demand is there. Question- would anyone really object to having a M&S foodhall on the Lane if they ever opened one up?

Rents have tripled in the last 3 years, an average single unit on Lordship Lane in 2005 was roughly 10-15kpa, now the same units are fetching 30-40kpa. More and more independents on the Lane will go out of business at the next review. The next 2 years will again see a huge change to the area. The freeholders are not just after higher rents, they are also after better covenant. Better covenant equates to greater freehold value. Out go the independents in come the National chains. Market forces I?m afraid, the only way you can stop it is to cap the rents and that is not going to happen. RICS should have scrapped years ago and its directors put in prison for the things they have allowed to happen in this Country. Residential property prices have also risen exponentially as a direct result of what has happened on the Lane. So which way do you really want it? Personally I would go and tell Mr Linton to go and stick it, but then I?ve always been a bit of a selfish Northern lad..

I have posted this before so sorry if you have already read it, but i still think its worth another look. It,s not my best pub ever but it encapsulates the reasons why I run bars for a living Pardon my naivete I know for a pub... It sits in a hamlet off the beaten track, two miles from the nearest sizeable settlement which in turn is ten miles from anywhere that might reasonably be described as civilisation. The public bar is rumoured to have a pool table and a jukebox, but I don't know of anyone who's ventured in that side since God was a boy. The lounge is dark and dingy, there's little choice of beer. Wadworth's 6X, Stella (from a can) or Natch cider (from a bottle). There'll be a house red if the landlord hasn't already drunk it. Any of these will likely be served in glassware that would benefit from a second pass through the glass washer if indeed they have one. They do not sell food. There is no jukebox, fruit machine, television or anything to suggest that the room has been altered in 100 years. There is a patina that could only have been created by so many smokers over that period of time. It is quiet enough at lunchtime, maybe two or three folk will be in and occasionally the landlord will add his wisdom as he opens his second bottle of wine (he is educated, ancient and autocratic). He opens at 7.30 in the evening and often as not the place is packed. Some folk will put their wellies on and walk 2 miles across open fields and a golf course, braving windy, wet November weather to get there. Why does this place work? Is it because people have to talk to each other for amusement because there are no distractions such as a telly? Or is it because he has something that one rarely sees these days: an open log fire that burns at all hours in all seasons and weathers? Surely it's not because his "watch stops working" now and then?
