What's in a name ?

Kai Rooney for example ,is it me or does it jar when run by your ears, no doubt he's a sweet little baby but what possesses people when it comes to names ?

The woman down the road from me is called Terrie-lee

Her children are called;

Alfie

Shanie

Tillie

Mollie

Harvey ( pronounced 'arvey ) usually followed by "get 'ere you little bart'"

You would think that someone would run the names by a friend or husband/lover to see how they scan, but no not here. Each name when shouted at full tilt is capable of setting a car alarm off, when done together it rattles the roof tiles however , perversely I listen out for it as I do secretly enjoy it

Conversely, a lady at my sons gymnastic club has an energetic & unruly child aged about 4. This little darling is called William. Mummy is classic pure bread bonkers english posh , her voice is not unlike Cybil in Fawlty towers when she barks "Basil" at Mr Fawlty.

Now that voice is combined with a pitch that could sharpen knives, with a clipped delivery that seems to have dissected all the vowels out of "William" so it now comes out as "WLLM"

Boy do I like that, yes sir I could listen to him being called again and again, again and again, again and again every week & what a fun filled hour that it is.

I had considered having my ears syringed sometime soon but now i think I'll wait a while

Oh and incase this sounds a bit snooty I chose my children's names in a really simple but practical way, I took Mrs W**F to the park and shouted the various choices like you would calling your dogs,.

Tom & Sam worked best, easy & neat when followed by a whistle

Good boys

I agree that caution should prevail.

Some friends of a devout Christian mien (if mien is the word I'm seeking), naturally took inspiration from the Bible and named their first-born Goliath.

At school, all the other girls teased her mercilessly.

And every David took it upon himself to have a pop.

He's quite well known WMTD, just a few doors down from that German barber, Herr Kutt.

    • All the more reason to support the BBC.  The last thing we want is a news service controlled by the likes.
    • I am genuinely curious… what is this obsession with keeping children active with things to do after school. From what I know, most  CV kids to rugby or football of a weekend but do they actually need activities during the week after school? What about going home, relaxing before homework and I don’t know, reading a book, drawing, Lego, constructing a car/plane.. even making some cookies…
    • The BBC is one of the finest, if not the finest, broadcasters in the world.  They have been admired by many across the world for their journalism.  There have been numerous arrests since their recent expose on convenience shops that cover ups for criminals - money laundering, contraband,  illegal workers and the like. By no means perfect and some of what they have done in the modern world is questionable - the website often comes across as tabloid or sensationalist, as do some of their documentaries, and at times it is full of low grade game shows, fly on the wall etc which bring the punters and money, including overseas, in but is not quality TV.  In their desperation for 'balance' they've given too much air time and credibility to some more extreme views, which contributed to Brexit and some of the rise in right wing parties.  I wish they'd say 'the convicted criminal' every time they talk about Yaxley Lenon. The programme was clumsy, why it didn't go through proper clearance including the lawyers, I don't know.  But it created zero stir at the time. Zero.  And had no impact on the election, so Trump has no case.  I hope they don't cave in like many of the US corporations and media.  Oh and well done to South Park using the small p*nis defence in ridiculing him. What I expect is as the Beeb is pretty centrist in it;s reporting in riles some of those who thrive on the toxic populism we have seen since Trump mark 1 and Brexit.  How sad.
    • I understand from Pao that they are taking a short break but will be re-opening on Tuesday 25th November and also that there will be a sign in the window tomorrow, by way of confirmation. Meanwhile, greatly  missed!
