malumbu
A few of us were up there for New Year's eve as per usual. Sadly the trees spoil the view of the fireworks. It is not ancient woodland and would be great to return it to the single oak and grazing of sheep as in the old days. This would also be great opportunity for those soggy sheep up North to have some respite from recent weather and come south on holiday. How do I start a petition or who do I write to to get some action? BJ?? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/88663-one-tree-hill/ Share on other sites

HopOne
It is true that there were sheep grazing on the hill, at least some of it - if I find a link for this will post it. It is not completely out there as most the local land was agricultural just 200 years ago. That is plenty of time for mature trees to grow, whether you believe any of it is ancient or not. Better view of fireworks from Blythe Hill IMO. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/88663-one-tree-hill/#findComment-944105 Share on other sites
mikeb
I don't know the area quite well enough to say which slope of One Tree Hill this picture shows but I suggest you ask John Beasley or Steve Grindley1. East Dulwich Through Time, John Beasleyhttps://books.google.co.uk/books?id=FWiIAwAAQBAJ&lpg=PT117&ots=7fsxxaH-0C&dq=sheep%20%22one%20tree%20hill%22%20honor%20oak&pg=PT117#v=onepage&q&f=false2. Sydenham Town blog post (search for one Tree Hill, about half way down)https://sydenham.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?style=5&f=10&t=41403. Also, this suggests there was significantly less foliage back in Edwardian times Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/88663-one-tree-hill/#findComment-947272 Share on other sites

mikeb
I had a link to a South East Central blog post that mentioned sledging down One Tree Hill in the 1980s but for some reason it won't post here. uncleglen
I have a suggestion malumbu. Leave the very few trees that we have left in 'this neck of the woods' well alone and go up north yourself for the sheep. I hope the ticketing for the fireworks pays for itself but given the amount of security and stuff shutting off the roads- I bet it doesn't. We survived quite well before 2000 without the things Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/88663-one-tree-hill/#findComment-947304 Share on other sites
HopOne
Thanks for posting mikeb. That first photo is great as it shows the sheep grazing and also backs up Nisbet when he says that the South and East sides were wooded at the end of the 19th century. edhistory
Mike,Thanks for locating the picture "one3".The sheep are on an undulating field and not on a hill. It's the same old problem with unprovenanced material. It may be possible to work out the position of the field and the orientation of the photograph if that is "Observatory House" on the skyline.John uble is Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/88663-one-tree-hill/#findComment-947720 Share on other sites

mikeb
@ DF - sorry about that, hope your machine is ok@ JK - It looks to me like St Augustines but I'll leave you to battle that one with John Beasley and Steve Grindley!thanks for prompting me to find out about Observatory House. HopOne
Yes, I had taken that to be St Augustines and the old Honor Oak golf club house to the left. Happy to be corrected on that. edhistory
This is St Augustine's.Observatory house is a little to the SSE of the church.Photograph one3 is taken from a footpath adjacent to the derelict canal. The sheep are in a field down in the Ravensbourne valley, Kent. One Tree Hill has thick ancient woodland. The map survey range is 1863-73. Scale 1:10360. Allegedly the first OS large scale survey of this area.John K Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/88663-one-tree-hill/#findComment-958314 Share on other sites
edhistory
The church had been built by the 1898 second edition map and the fireworks factory makes an appearance. There are some field boundary changes. The excavated platform for the church really does look like a risky clay-slump area.Lots of woodland (SSW counting method) on top of One Tree Hill.John K Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/88663-one-tree-hill/#findComment-958714 Share on other sites
edhistory
The 1914 OS map neatly bookends the c1905 photo. There are now trees on the hill. The sheep are hiding under the trees.John K Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/88663-one-tree-hill/#findComment-961052 Share on other sites
