A few of us were up there for New Year's eve as per usual. Sadly the trees spoil the view of the fireworks. It is not ancient woodland and would be great to return it to the single oak and grazing of sheep as in the old days.

This would also be great opportunity for those soggy sheep up North to have some respite from recent weather and come south on holiday.

How do I start a petition or who do I write to to get some action? BJ??

It is true that there were sheep grazing on the hill, at least some of it - if I find a link for this will post it. It is not completely out there as most the local land was agricultural just 200 years ago. That is plenty of time for mature trees to grow, whether you believe any of it is ancient or not. Better view of fireworks from Blythe Hill IMO.

I don't know the area quite well enough to say which slope of One Tree Hill this picture shows but I suggest you ask John Beasley or Steve Grindley

2. Sydenham Town blog post (search for one Tree Hill, about half way down)

3. Also, this suggests there was significantly less foliage back in Edwardian times

One Tree Hill, Honor Oak

I have a suggestion malumbu. Leave the very few trees that we have left in 'this neck of the woods' well alone and go up north yourself for the sheep. I hope the ticketing for the fireworks pays for itself but given the amount of security and stuff shutting off the roads- I bet it doesn't.

We survived quite well before 2000 without the things

Not sure where you could sledge down One Tree Hill ?

Certainly back in the 80's kids did go sledging down Dawson Hill when I lived opposite..

Too many trees now..

Mike,

Thanks for locating the picture "one3".

The sheep are on an undulating field and not on a hill.

It's the same old problem with unprovenanced material.

It may be possible to work out the position of the field and the orientation of the photograph if that is "Observatory House" on the skyline.

  • 4 weeks later...

This is St Augustine's.

Observatory house is a little to the SSE of the church.

Photograph one3 is taken from a footpath adjacent to the derelict canal.

The sheep are in a field down in the Ravensbourne valley, Kent.

One Tree Hill has thick ancient woodland.

The map survey range is 1863-73. Scale 1:10360. Allegedly the first OS large scale survey of this area.

John K

The church had been built by the 1898 second edition map and the fireworks factory makes an appearance.

There are some field boundary changes.

The excavated platform for the church really does look like a risky clay-slump area.

Lots of woodland (SSW counting method) on top of One Tree Hill.

    • Hi Sue, they were not local solicitors. Andrea’s was based in Wales and the other firms involved were large nationwide conveyancing companies (rather than conventional high street solicitors). I’m happy to advise clients and buyers privately on what I believe to be their shortcomings but I don’t think doing so in public on the forum would be appropriate, particularly as they are not locally based. My general advice would always be to steer clear of the big conveyancing companies as they are, in my experience, notoriously difficult to contact when the need arises and the case handler is often not a fully qualified solicitor and so issues have to be referred upwards to “technical teams” internally, which was part of the problem in Andrea’s chain. • A slightly vulnerable but hopeful post… Hi everyone, I’m a guy in my mid-thirties who’s recently moved back to London and East Dulwich (I previously lived here for many years before, so I know the area well). But if I’m honest, I’ve found the return a little tough. Most of my close friends have moved out of London to start families — totally understandable — but it’s left me feeling a bit adrift and not quite sure how to make new connections again. Work has taken up a huge chunk of my life in recent years, and I’ve definitely let hobbies, interests and a proper social life fall by the wayside. I feel like I went from a fun social life in my 20’s to suddenly blinking and realising things had gone a bit er…quiet. So, I’m trying to redress the balance a bit — mainly so myself and my partner don’t murder each other 😂, and just to meet some new local faces. I was wondering: is anyone else in a similar boat? And would there be any interest in starting a relaxed, low-key local social group? Could be a casual pub meet, sports, park hangouts, live comedy nights — open to ideas!  I’m happy to do the organising/admin side of things — just wanted to put it out there and see if there’s any appetite. I’ll gauge interest and take it from there.  If you’d prefer not to reply publicly, feel free to drop me a DM.  Cheers all! 👋
