?35 for a bowl of soup sounds ridiculously high. Once all the fanfare has passed, and the number of customers begin to dwindle prices will fall and inevitably the shop won't be able to afford to continue. Daylight robbery, the most I've paid for a bowl of soup in a restaurant is 3.95 at the beefeater.

Lou..

I was saying that to cover the rent and rates they would need to charge ?35.00 the average price of a meal and drinks elsewhere in E.D.

Ah yes I see your point now. Usually these soup things work out of mobile portakabin's don't they? It seems a bit of a silly business move to take on a commercial unit in a high rental location, for what is pretty much just, well, soup and salad. I read a fascinating article in the Mail Online back on November about expensive puddings in Scotland. People travel from all over the world to pay ?30 plus for high end desserts. Maybe a high end soup filled with oysters and caviar could work?

WTF. There is someone out there with a brain as big as mine.

I like how American diners/cafes offer soup and sandwich, either a cup or a bowl of soup, plus a sandwich or sometimes half a sandwich. Don't understand why more places don't do that here, but I guess it would be less profitable. My mum used to give us soup and sandwiches on Sunday evenings in front of the TV.

Generally, stews have less liquid than soups, are much thicker and require longer cooking over low heat.

While soups are almost always served in a bowl, stews may be thick enough to be served on a plate with the gravy as a sauce over the solid ingredients.

Hope that helps..

Soup and salad mixed are not uncommon in far eastern cuisine, particularly in Thailand and Malaysia. Fusion cuisine has often matched up bread and wraps with soup and salad. In theory it could easily be done, but perhaps the soup would have to be of a thicker 'stew' like consistency.

Soup in an artisian bread bowl - that's my idea.

Personally I am reassured we still have phone boxes as they provide a valuable emergency use. If you are mugged for you phone, you can call 999 from them, if your house or business is on fire and you run out without a phone you can dial 999 from them. Some people don't have a mobile so its potentially reassuring for them knowing they can call someone if they feel unwell whilst out.  Just because some people don't see value in an object, doesn't mean others don't.
    • Hardly a non-story @malumbu still one of the lead stories on the BBC.....you clearly don't understand when to serve humble pie! 😉  https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvgk40l8jm7o   Absolutely. It's a disaster. And for this government, who were happy to tell us they had 14 years to prepare to lead, it has been one self-inflicted disaster after another since they took over. To be honest the signs were there when they were in opposition but I think we all gave them the benefit of the doubt as they weren't the Tories and now they have the reigns the additional scrutiny that brings is tripping them up.
    • I don't think I've ever seen it used other than for gluing advertising on it. It's definitely not a priority but these things typically get ignored and become part of the furniture (so to speak).  There is a beautiful old red box near Upland Rd. I miss old red boxes... 😞 Anyway I'll have a dig around and see if anything can be done.
    • £30-40 for M&S Christmas food for two seems very low! And only £60 for food and drink for 8-10 people?  We have had M&S food at Christmas in the past, and it came to a lot more than that. I suppose it depends exactly what you are buying. We left it late to book a Christmas Day meal out last year, so there weren't many options left.  The Cherry Tree menu looked very nice. That was our first mistake. We also overlooked the fact that it was a Young's pub, with all that implies about the food. That was our second mistake. We don't have shedloads of money. We  took the view that we deserved a nice meal  out after working bloody hard all year. So it was doubly disappointing to basically waste a lot of money which could have been very much better  spent elsewhere.
