Petition for reasonable rents from Dulwich Estates

Umm, bumpy, unfortunately as a charity the Estate have to ask the 'market rate' for their rents etc. Or at least that is what they will probably tell you. By law, they cannot offer special or reduced terms as this is against the Charities Commission rules on charitable status.

I'm absolutely not saying this to excuse the Estate, and i can see how this position really does not help to support businesses who may need more flexible terms etc and is actually punitive in its application.

Sincerely, i do wish you the best of luck, and i'll be watching with interest to see if anything does change in the rather rigid and inflexible stance that the Estate takes with its tenants on rent issues as a result of your petition.... sadly, i won't be holding my breath...

You are repeating yourself.

I don't think the Dulwich Estate owns any retails property in East Dulwich.

Can you give examples, or are you making it up?

Historically The Dulwich estate used to manage it's own residential properties, and were socially responsible for the rents they charged, mostly inline with the local councils, they at some point around the 1990's then marketed their houses through estate agents and hiked the rents up in the process.

This so called charity is a joke, the only beneficiaries I perceive are the people that run it and not anyone who has any genuine need.

    • Ah, thanks,  it all comes flooding back. I've actually been to the Hastings shop, I'd forgotten all about it, along with her name! Didn't she (in between?)  take over what  was then The Magnolia, previously The Magdala, now The Lordship, with her then partner? Or is that some figment of my imagination?  In fact, didn't they transform it from The Magdala (much missed) to The Magnolia? With flowery wallpaper covering the front of the bar? Which reminds me of the pub's brief period after The Magnolia  as the ill-conceived and ill-fated The Patch.
