Lynne
Twice this last week I've seen dustbin men wearing official Veolia jackets in people's front gardens looking in their bins. Any ideas why? And are they entitled to come into private gardens? Southwark going to start fining people for the wrong sort of rubbish? DulwichFox
Yes.. ..I got a Green Thumbs up Sticker on my Blue Bin.. Southwark Council. The slogan was.. 'THANKS FOR DOING IT' The things in this bin will be recycled to benefit the local area and environment. VEOLIA. DulwichFox.P.S. There were no stickers on any other bins nearby. Lynne
OK, thanks. So what's the legal position of all this. Can they come into our gardens? Is the rubbish in the bin ours or Southwarks? If the rubbish is ours, then until collection we can put what we like in it.Personaly, I don't like people wandering into my garden unannounced. DulwichFox
VEOLIA is a French Company contracted by Southwark Council to collect our waste.. Technically, anything put in the bin belongs to Southwark Council. It is important that waste is put in the correct bin. Obviously, the waste collectors need to come into your garden to access your bins.. and inspectors can gain access to check its contents.. Southwark can refuse to take waste put in the wrong bin or even fine you for doing so. Lynne
Your experience of uninvited guests in your garden has obviously been more positive than mine. It's all a bit of a waste of time and money, isn't it? They only inspect the top layer. I could be the Dulwich Ripper and fill the bin with body parts as long as I put paper and bottles on the top. Unless, as I said earlier, they're going to make money from the fines. Dopamine1979
I got one of those stickers too. Our neighbours didn't. I felt disproportionately smug. I'm guessing it's because I usually make sure there's no plastic bags in the recycling?? Little things, eh?As for people only putting paper and bags on the top to hide non-recylcable items to fool the refuse collectors ... really? Ms Blueberry
the chaps opening our bins were not wearing veolia jackets or anything that would indicate something official. so, i will continue to be alert as they may be copy cat inspectors. there have too many recent burglaries and this seems too much of a coincidence.
